I've been thinking about this more today (man, it's gonna be a long 2.5 months!) and I thought of some more it might be, all of which you've already named, Big Boss.

I just hope we are not thinking too big here. Ernst...God bless him...sometimes the dude is hard to read.

Hopefully it won't be too terribly long before it's announced.

...you won't forget me when I go.

    what show?

    Well that's it now...
FTD has got us speculating (again...). Many (all?) of us hope to have their favorite show out and most of us will be disappointed.... all of that because the won't tell us anything.
As for me, I will stop hoping... chances are I will be disappointed, so I'd better not dream, nor follow that dream

The more I think about it, the more I believe the October FTD is going to be a show from 1972 that was supposedly not recorded on soundboard. I mean look at the FTD pattern; we have live concert material from 1969, 1970, 1971, 1973, 1974, 1975, 1976, and 1977. 1972 is the only year where they have not released any live material, so I am betting on a release from this year.

The question is, what show from 1972 could it be?

Here are a few I will speculate on:

    Buffalo, NY
    Hampton Roads, VA (afternnon show)
New York, NY (the first show at MSG)
    Chicago, IL
    * Honolulu, Hawaii (one of the Nov 72 shows)

    * I recall hearing that RCA possibly recorded this show in preparation for the Aloha show that was coming up at the beginning of 1973.

    Any thoughts on these?

According to Ernst, it will be a SOUNDBOARD recording....so it would appear that the Memphis '61 show, while definitely cool to have, does not appear to fit the bill for the October release.

You are right on Big Boss....RCA was in Honolulu doing some preparation work for ALOHA....in fact, originally, one of those Honolulu shows in 1972 was going to be used for THE special....but The Colonel didn't want to do the special too soon after ELVIS ON TOUR hit the movie theatres...thus the reason they pushed it back to January '73.

I am not sure if RCA actually recorded the Honolulu '72 shows, or if they were just there doing prep. work...my GUESS would be they recorded at least part of the show....after all, how would they know what to do if they didn't record the show to see what worked/didn't work?

But....I have to say, in my opinion, that if FTD does release a show from '72 for the October release, that my money is still riding on the HAMPTON ROADS show from April, '72.

Very good point there Mike, but from what I understand, the October release is supposed to be of a show that was "believed to not have been restored"; how you interpret restored - I have no idea; therefore, I feel it will be either Hawaii 1972 or Hampton, VA 72 (afternoon show), becasue everyone knows the eve show from Hampton 72 was recorded, plus I think Ernst and the people at BMG would want this show released on either a special On Tour project or along with another box set?

Big Boss had a point with what is said on the other boards: "it will be a show of which nobody thought it was preserved".

If that could be fact, then it won't be anything from On Tour 1972, since we all know (more or less) which shows have been recorded.

So, if this October release should be a surprise, we still got some figuring to do, don't we?

1961 (like said) won't be it, since there are no soundboards from that period, not even (too bad) from Hawaii 61.

So it has to be something from the Seventies.

The obvious show that would surprise us all would be Indianapolis. I remember over the last couple of years there were several rumours about a soundboard to exist...

    Any serious thoughts?

    O.K., now I am confused...

According to your last post, we are getting a show that is not to have been "restored"...but earlier in this thread, you said you had read that Ernst said a show thought not to have been "preserved"....HELP!!!!

I do agree with you Big Boss that it would make sense for Ernst to hang on to the HAMPTON ROADS show for an RCA project focusing on the ON TOUR material...but how long is it going to be before we see anything from ON TOUR? We're already well past the 30th anniversary of ON TOUR (2002), so perhaps RCA is planning to wait until the 35th anniversary in 2007? I don't know....it's all such a mystery...

My one serious thought, Sonny, is that I seriously hope that is the case.

It seems to me like if Ernst makes any further comments about the release before it's actually announced and does not used any words along the lines of "monumental" to describe it, then that must not be it though.

I think I heard that the Indy tape was in the hands of an Indianapolis deejay--does that ring any bells?

Sounds like I've heard that story somewhere too, regarding the Indianapolis disc jockey having a copy of the show.

Anyone else have more information on this???

I am sorry Mike, that was a typo on me

    I meant to say preserved.

Anyhow, I agree with Lonnie, those lines like monumental really do arouse my curiosity. Another thing that has me curious is why hasn't FTD announced the title yet? I mean it's almost Aug 1, and the title is supposed to be released in October! Oh well, maybe I am just too impatient; I think I'll just have a glass of gin and relax

    So Many Good Ideas!

I've read all the posts on this topic, and I must say that the ideas being discussed are fantastic. I don't think the Indy concert will see the light of day prior to August 2007, especially since Graceland is pushing the 50th anniversary of Rock N Roll. You know, Elvis at the end isn't their best marketing tool. Anyway, I'll take a stab at the Greensboro Concert (72) being released. It's been booted twice, the most recent being a very nice CDR. Takin' Tahoe Tonight was a pre-emptive strike against 2 concurrent boots of the same show. Maybe that will be an FTD trend? No matter what they decide to release, I am grateful for the label. To have a constant string of new Elvis releases makes us fans the luckiest people alive.

    Question

Armond, very interesting input my friend. I would definitely love to have the Greensboro show from 1972 in better quality, but my instincts keep nagging at me saying it's not gonna happen - this time. I still believe that if the title is from 1972, that it's going to be either the Aft show from Hampton VA, or one of the shows from Hawaii in Nov 72.

There is one more interesting tidbit. I recall reading somewhere (can't remember the book/magazine) that someone stated that either MGM or RCA recorded both of the Knoxville, TN shows from April 1972? Has anyone ever read or heard of this? If this indeed happened, maybe our title is coming from here?

    What Did He Say?

    Big Boss Man,

I hadn't heard that the Knoxville show had been recorded. That would certainly be a neat surprise. I would be thrilled if the Hampton show were to be released. To me, it was the best show of 1972, if not his entire career (hope I'm not opening a can of worms).

Anyway, didn't Ernst say that a desperate search was made for the soundboard recording of the infamous Pittsburgh show 12/31/76, and that it simply doesn't exist? Now, he is saying that the October FTD release will be a show that was once thought not to exist. Hmmm, I know I'm stretching here, and from a marketing standpoint it doesn't make sense, but what if the show he's talking about is the soundboard from the Pittsburgh show? Certainly a pipe dream, but hey, dreams are what it's all about!
