TUPELO - They never left the building.
They just had a very long intermission.
The official Tupelo Elvis Presley Fan Club has reactivated, exactly 50 years to the day The King of Rock n' Roll played the Tupelo fair in 1956. Almost 20 people - mostly women - showed up at the chapel on the birthplace grounds to kick off the new club. Fans from around the world signed up to be a member of the Tupelo Elvis Presley Fan Club, and there are about 400 members so far, said Jane Riley, who helped organize the Elvis Presley Festival.
"It's just amazing the common denominator that Elvis Presley and his life and his music provides," Riley said.
Members, some dressed in Elvis regalia, elected officers and voted on by-laws at Tuesday's meeting.
Barbara Mallory was elected its president, reprising her role as leader of the 1956 fan club named the Elvis Presley Sweethearts.
Riley brought an enlarged photo of the original 1956 group.
"We were a bunch of teenage girls who were crazy about Elvis," said Mallory, who formed the club with cousins and friends. Although the group disbanded after its members matured, "all of us still remain Elvis fans."
Riley said at the meeting that many overseas fan clubs act much like civic clubs by donating part of their money to charities. The rest often goes to sending members to America to visit Graceland and the birthplace.
The Tupelo members agreed to choose a charity at their next meeting.
Members who signed up - many at the Elvis Presley Festival - before Sept. 26, 2006, will have lifetime membership. Anyone who signs up now will have yearly membership for an undetermined fee. The one-year membership runs from Sept. 27 to Sept. 26, 2007.
Said member Daniel Ausborn, who went to school with The King: "I'm proud to see this happen for Elvis."
