    Steve Irwin died

THE Crocodile Hunter, Steve Irwin, is dead.

He was killed in a freak accident in Cairns, police sources said. It is understood he was killed by a sting-ray barb that went through his chest.

He was swimming off the Low Isles at Port Douglas filming an underwater documentary and that' is when it occured.

Mr Irwin's body was being flown to Cairns.

Ambulance officers confirmed they attended a reef fatality this morning at Batt Reef off Port Douglas.

It is believed Mr Irwin's American-born wife Terri is trekking on Cradle Mountain in Tasmania and has yet to be told of her husband's death.

Mr Irwin - known worldwide as the Crocodile Hunter - is famous for his enthusiasm for wildlife and his catchcry "Crikey!".

The father of two's Crocodile Hunter program was first broadcast in 1992 and has been shown around the world on cable network Discovery.

He has also starred in movies and has developed the Australia Zoo wildlife park, north of Brisbane, which was started by his parents Bob and Lyn Irwin.

i was so shocked to read this, i didn't want to belive it at first

he died doing something he loved. my condolences to the Irwins and the rest of the Australian zoo crew. i am so upset by this

Steve was one of the people i admired most from when i first saw his show, i can't remember when. i practically grew up watching the Crocodile Hunter. i learned a lot from Steve and his show, and i was always thoroughly entertained by him as well

i couldn't believe it when i saw that he had died. that sort of thing doesn't happen to the croc hunter. the guy is invincible! hopefully Terri, his wife, Bindi and Bob, his children, and all the other crew at the Australia Zoo will keep up what Steve worked so hard on, the education of people all around the world about the conservation of wildlife. a cause like that is so huge that it cannot be forgotten

    crikey, i'll miss him!

    RIP Steve

He was such a great guy.... I really loved his passion that he had about animals and the way he could transpont it to his audience. Loved the way he worked along with his wife and family.

His impact on how to make a documentary is unbelievable. He not only changed the way nature documentaries are filmed and presented, but documentaries in general....

God bless him and I wish his wife and two kids the strenght to deal with these hard times...

    This was very sad indeed.

I recall watching his programs many times with my son during his younger years, and even today I'd still tune in to his program whenever I came across it.

At least he went doing what he enjoyed, so rest in piece mate.

I still can't believe it. How can such a fun loving guy, with such energy, and so young, be taken from this world
But he died doing what he loved, which was beautiful
Gonna miss you mate, R.I.P Steve

Myself and the kids loved him. Hate to hear it. It breaks my heart that his chrldren are so young. I have a girl and boy close to the same age, and they freak when I leave for a couple of weeks. Can't imagine. Prayers to his children and family. RIP Steve and thanks for the fun memories.

Australia is in mourning...our most favourite son has been taken away tragically.....the Australian children are finding this news exceptionally difficult to grasp. They are wanting explanations, that their parents and teachers are having a diffcult time with. One of the problems that we will all be facing, is that Steve is the face of our 'Quarantine Service'.....his face is on bill boards for miles down the main stretch of highway in Queensland....

sad sad news , I woke up yesterday morning only to hear about it on the t.v. news, In the nicest possible way he was as mad as a hatter, but at the same time he knew exactly what he was doing and he treated ALL creatures with a huge element of respect, my sympathies go to his wife and 2 children, what a huge loss of personality and talent.
God rest you and take care of you, R.I.P. STEVE IRWIN, rickster.

This was some really sad news to wake up to. I've always looked up to this man, an always will! I was stuck to the tv screen when he were on. He have been on animal planet for as long as i can remeber, and he made the best show on that channel, that's for d*mn sure!

Thoughts to Terri, Mindi and Bob all the way from Norway =)

    RIP, Crocodile Hunter.
...you won't forget me when I go.

When my mom told me about it I was really shocked. Cuz even though he did a lot of risky things he went about it the right way so no one wouldn't get harmed. This is really a shame. What a life to loose. I used to watch him all the time, his show was always interesting and never dull. He'll be missed.

    R.I.P Steve Irwin

With the experience he had with dangerous animals. Surely he could have worn protective clothing to stop the Stingray attacking him.

This guy has really left a BIG impression on people! He is all over the internett and newspapers the days following his deat, and that he TRULY deserve! NO doubt about that! This is kinda what i imagine 16th of august 1977 were like.

I beleve he is sitting on a cloud up there irritated that it was a sting ray and not a crocodile that sendt him to heaven =)

He had maximal bad luck, i red some where that only two cases were registerd where a human had been killed by a sting ray.

Let's hope his children Bob and Bindi and his wife Terri will continue what Steve started.
Not everyone bother to make a differense, Steve Irwin did, and thank God for all the things he accomplished.
