"Fans" don't focus on the negative of Elvis' life or laugh about the way he died...What was so comical about that?? Please! Where's the respect??

We all know he had a drug problem...Why are you both repeating "Elvis was a junkie"?? to death! Unless, you were there, you don't know the facts, I'm not saying I do, but I don't pretend to...We the fans will never know the whole story!

The fans didn't say Elvis was a "clean, cut country boy"...We say he was and still is The King! He was also a man and a human being...That's how he should be remembered! A great man and the greatest entertainer ever!!
(not "Elvis the Junkie") ...What the ??

You're right...I wasn't there.....but I base my opinion on the hundreds of shows I have on cd.....the moodswings you hear in shows .....the hundreds and hundreds of books and magazines I have read....and the many intervieuws by the innercircle of Elvis friends.
Elvis' use of prescribed drugs increased tremendously the last few years to an outrageous amount......almost all of the prescribed drugs found in his body after his death was in a lethal dose.
Yes...I am a true Elvis fan...and it hurts to see that the man didn't take better care of himself....and that the people around him didn't care either.....

Why not being realistic people....it will not change Elvis image.
Personally I rather talk about this with fellow fans than listen or look at an Elvis impersonator.....I think they hurt Elvis image more than the fact that Elvis was addicted to prescribed drugs.

    pay attention

Yeah, but putting the focus on prescription-medicine doesn't do anything to change history, neither does it bring Elvis back. Of course I don't recommend such a lifestyle, but it's understandable. Most people don't have the slightest notion how difficult it was being Elvis Presley. I mean he couldn't ever enter a supermarket or an open park without encountering hysteria. Such loneliness is often enough to have moodswings and not just the drugs are to be blamed. We shouldn't deny these health-problems, but we shouldn't pay too much attention to it either.

yes you are completely right, we were not in his shoes, we should not judge so cruel and onesided, if we elvis fans say these things , what do we expect others? elvis is due to some respect or not?!

We all "agree" and think it's cool that the Beatles, the Sones, Jim Morrison, Janis Joplin etc did drugs....when it comes to Elvis everybody thinks he was a saint.
Well.....he was not......he was just as human as anybody else in this world.
Listen to the "Desert Storm" monologue and some other shows in 75/76.....Elvis was far from being himself....he took huge amounts of "prescribed" drugs.
He's rambling on and on....going from one subject to another.....karate....his paunch that is actually a "bulletproof vest".....how many airplanes are traveling with him....insulting the Sweet Insprirations on stage....etc...etc.
Elvis was in serious health problems!!!!!
If he took better care of himself...and the people around him would care about him too....maybe he would still be here today.
Lots of those old Sun rockers are still alive...Jerry Lee Lewis is still performing !!

    I agree.

The fanatical response to Orwell's original remark, which while not the most tactful thing to say, isn't something to start making sweeping claims about, is why I rarely post here anymore.

We all know Elvis had a problem with drugs it's certainly no secret. What we have to remember is that he did have health problems aside from the drugs, had no real help from his "entourage" or his so-called doctors and he felt trapped doing the same concerts year after year - thanks to the colonel. Both his emotional and physical health were compromised.

The way he died has no bearing on his talent, kind heart and his love for his fans. So.....if you're a real fan with genuine respect for him, you'll remember him for those things and forget the the negative articles that have been circulated about him for so long. Even if you've talked to those who used to be around him for information, most of those if not all were covering their own guilt in the matter. They were indulging too! There is still one doctor that maintains he died of a heart attack and not an overdose.

I for one believe he died because of the combination of poor health, depression and drugs that complicated his already weakened system from the poor health and exhaustion of more concert dates than he could handle.

I only remember him for the soothing feeling I always get when I hear him sing and that wonderful smile, beautiful face and the way he reached out to people. I believe he was calling out for help and no one heard him...........so back off negative people, you weren't in his shoes.

Wether Elvis was a drug user or not is not important. What is, is the fact that all his so called friends and his girlfriend ,even his own father did absolutley nothing to stop him.Elvis was only human and when you get in his state it takes loved ones to interveen,as you dont think right for yourself. I know Elvis would get mad when they would try to help but sometimes you have to grow some balls and stop being worried that your selfish spongeing will be affected.
In not doing anything all these people killed the goose that layed the golden egg and have robbed the world of the greatest and most talented musical artist ever known.

    Cool

I don't believe anyone can be blamed for Elvis's death except Elvis himself if fingers are to be pointed. It was difficult for people around him as Elvis was their boss and they had no other income except from him. The few times they did try and stop him he blew up, and when they replaced the chemicals with sugars in the drug capsules Elvis got more drugs off different doctors. It was a very unfortunate set of circumstances and Elvis also was able to cut people who challenged his decisions off. Basically his fame, money and power prevented him from being able to accept help.

It's funny that in a lot of people's view someone who tells the (negative) truth is disrespectful. So I am disrespectful and I have no problem with it.

    My opinion of "respectful fans":

Elvis's drug problem should have been nipped in the bud at least by the mid sixties - with help - all addicts NEED help. The sugar pills came a bit too late. No one much thought of it earlier as they were too busy indulging themselves and riding on his coatails - they're still doing it today.

As far as his death, I'm only saying that we're only fueling the sensationalism that's already always out there and who likes muck? Only the muck rakers!

    blame

I guess that (s)he who is without sin may cast the first stone. I like Elvis' citate from Hank Williams' 'Men With Broken Hearts': 'so help your brother along the way, no matter where he starts. For the same God that made you, made him too'. We never stood in Elvis' shoes or saw things through his eyes.

It's difficult enough being above average and that's what Elvis was. His life had become very complicated because of his status. Of course there are endogene and exogene factors, but all these things have happened no matter what we try to blame & rationalize.. Gentle his soul instead of fueling the fire of mockery..

I'm all for freedom of speech, yes sometimes I'm shocked at what I read, but hand on heart I can honestly say that nothing in this thread has shocked me! I've heard it all before and far worse, the irony of the comment (throne) has been commented on many times over the years. I think it could have been worded differently and the reactions would have been less inflamed.

I personally don't subscribe into making Elvis into a "Demi God" the man clearly had flaws just as we all do. Elvis' lifestyle and personality ensured great highs and great lows, without which he would not have been the legend he became and is. We have to embrace both and accept people will have different views. Arguments will abound as long as the legend lives.

You aren't right that the don't try to stop him, they have tried it but elvis wouldn't listen. It is his own fault that he didn't stop because if you really want to stop you can do it with the help of your friends but he didn't want any help.
    It's sad but true
