Thread: What's your favourite: Aloha or rehearsal?

Interestingly, I had the good fortune to interview Marty Pasetta on an unrelated topic, though I did take the opportunity to ask him a few EP related questions. He said of the rehearsal show that he was unhappy it was released and that Elvis would have been very unhappy at its release.

I have to agree with Mr. Pasetta...I don't think Elvis would have been very happy at all with the release of the rehearsal....

The live broadcast was better except for what now my love. In the rehersal he knocked that song out of the park. In the live broadcast he didnt screw up the words. The live broadcast was a singing clinic. He showed he was still King.
"When I was a child, ladies and gentlemen, I was a dreamer. I read comic books, and I was a hero in the movie. So every dream that I ever dreamed has come true a hundred times. I learned very early in life that without a song, the day would never end; without a song, a man ain't got a friend; without a song, the road would never bend; without a song. So I keep singing a song." - Elvis Presley

I really can't say because all i've seen is the 73 version . But i'll get back to ya on that as soon as i see the others. My personally favorite is Jonny B goode,he rocked the house with that version.

Not to start a new thread but on this You Tube video when it shows footage from Elvis on Tour he uses an inhaler. I know i'm off topic, just prove my point.

I have read before in some interview -- I wonder if it was yours, Kris -- that Marty Pasetta was not pleased about the rehearsal coming out, and I believe in that same interview he opined that Elvis would not have liked it either.

But his perspective is that of the director, whose goal it was the put together the perfect show, and he did a fine job of that. It makes sense that someone in that position would not have wanted a very imperfect rehearsal to be seen by the masses, lest it take away anything from his achievement of the broadcast.

But I don't think it does. And the fact is that the rehearsal show, warts and all (not really so many warts to speak of in the grand scheme of things), was a **** fine show. When the context is considered, I don't think that forgotten lyrics or any other sloppiness takes away much enjoyment from the show. The singing was as good or better than the broadcast -- think Trilogy and WNML -- and Elvis was having fun out there.

From a fan's perspective, there is no way this show should not have been released as it is so historically significant, it is a complete concert in perfect picture and sound, and it is Elvis in the pinnacle of his career. Serious no-brainer. I can't imagine Elvis would not want his fans to have this footage.

I am thinking that as sloppy as the rehearsal might have seemed to Mr. Pasetta, which is understandable when you compare it with the broadcast, he perhaps does not know that the rehearsal show is more par for the course with Elvis concerts in general. I know he attended some shows in preparation for the special, but it seems to me he must not be too familiar with what else is out there in the fans' hands.

On that note, let's consider all the alternate takes and studio banter and home recordings that we have of Elvis. Did Elvis intend for all that to be released? Of course not. Would it bother him to know that it would be one day? I really don't think so. Maybe back then he couldn't have conceived of it, but if Elvis can look down from where he is and see the enjoyment that we have gotten out of all that stuff and know that thanks to such material, we have been allowed new releases for so many years after his death, I think he would have to be cool with that. It is because he is gone that these things are the treasures that they are. But also it's a matter of some of his best work is not the master takes of the hits, but lesser known stuff that was not released in his lifetime. Or if it isn't some of his best work, it is among the most treasured, and it is illuminating, revealing, and adds infinite appeal to the man and artist.
...you won't forget me when I go.

I've always enjoyed both of the shows. The Rehearsal is much more relaxed then the original and I like it very much...forgetting the words and all is not a bad thing according me, i still think it's cute that he repeated the same vese all the time on Burning Love
But if I really have to choose, I'd go for the original show. It shows how professional Elvis was on stage

I liked Aloha {original} but I also like the rehearsal.
Would have to agree with Lonnie. I don't think Elvis would care that we see the rehearsal if he knew how much pleasure we get from it.

If I really have to choose I'll go with the concert for the reasons stated above rather than the rehearsal but I love both!

All Elvis Presley's concert's were slightly different and the Aloha special & rehearsal were two cases in point.I love both, probably because of the subtle differences in the performances:

"Aloha" the main event has Elvis performing a very smooth and professional show,he also looked the part with a last minute hair cut and poolside tan - "Burning Love", "Steamroller Blues","Love Me","What Now My Love" "Suspicious Minds" and "American Trilogy" are just some of the highlights.

In addition, the rehearsal show contains more fantastic performances with Elvis perhaps a bit more loose and relaxed - "What Now My Love' is a real classic [listen to Elvis's voice on the ending],"Fever","Something","Suspicious Minds" and a rocking "Hound Dog" are all great versions; Also, "I'm So Lonesome I Could Cry"is a lovely bluesy version and the CHFI finale, features the amazing American Eagle cape in all its glory.

Finally, which ever show you prefer - is a hard choice because they are both fantastic and a little different, but both 100% ELVIS in concert and I hope a BLU-RAY/HD DVD version is released some day.

I honestly can`t say which one I prefer......but I am glad that it was released....it`s all part of the legacy and I doubt if Elvis would have minded it being released. One thing I will say is that I remember getting my copy of "The Alternate Aloha" when it came out (just the soundtrack).....and I think to this day I can`t stand that cover!!
