I have to agree with Kakeli, I have the new DVD but like both shows for different reasons, I like Elvis' hair much better in the rehearsal more natural looking

I've come to decide that I actually prefer his hair in the Aloha show, but after his bangs have come down. It looks better as the show goes on and looks best really once it's been re-styled for the after-show session.

A lot of people, myself included, have noted that his face looks slimmer in the main show than in the rehearsal. I think that his hairstyle has something to do with our having that impression. I notice that in myself after I get haircuts. I don't know how much shorter his hair actually is in the main show on the sides, but the way it is styled, the hair on the sides is more tamed, laying closer to his head and giving the appearance of less width.

When you watch the two shows back to back (which is how the new DVD plays), the difference is stunning when he walks out for the broadcast show. Apparently Patti Parry is responsible for that haircut.
...you won't forget me when I go.

Ah a very good thread! Rehersal Or Main Show? Well as always my favorite is the Main show. On the Tv Special Elvis looks fabulous. Hair styled just right, nice deep tan, thin as a rake as giving one hell of a performance! It always amazed me how he could just toss his belt and cape which had to worth a pretty penny into the audience with out even a second thought. Aloha main show is my pick and is my all time favorite.

I don't think Elvis' hair ever looked the same after the Aloha show, in 1971-72 Elvis let his hair grow out of the quiff and had more of a parting (see picture) after the trim for the Aloha show it seemed to maintain a steady length. but 72 seemed the longest.

clowdy, you really ought to get it! I think the new edits will really impress you, and possibly make you think higher of the main show than you did before.

You're welcome. If you get the DVD set, let us know your impressions, and if you think differently about either show.

I still believe he looked best at the Aloha, but sounded better on the rehearsal. His voice was way to strained (tensed) on the Aloha version. Of course that has to do with having a billion people watching you, doing something that has never done before.

After the Aloha he used the same setlist for quite some time. I think that many post-Aloha performances were vocally better than the Aloha. But they obviously miss that magic that the Aloha had (and still has).

Regarding what I said before, I think it's more than just the hairstyle making him appear slimmer in the broadcast show--thought that is part of it, I believe. There is a noticeable difference in his face, but it's not just in the face. It's hard to believe it's the very next night.

"Aloha" has always been an all-time favorite of mine. I never tire of watching it.

The Rehearsal was quite exciting to see when it first came out on VHS (although I had had a boot copy much prior).

The recent Deluxe DVD release is a must-own purchase for any hardcore fan. I doubt I will ever watch the "original" broadcast again .... after viewing the concert(s) in their un-cut form.

If one wants to see EP in total control & perfection ---> the Main Event is it. "Magnificent" doesn't even come close to describing it. EP is a stud prancing across the stage in a "Superman" like fashion - in all of his Glory. It is EP - The Legend, at the pinnacle of his career / success. IMO, anybody who genuinely "dislikes" "Aloha" ................., is not the kind of "fan" that I can really ever relate to on a number of levels (ie: we probably won't agree on a number of things, both Elvis & Non-Elvis related).

If one wants to see the real EP & get a glimpse into how it really was on the road ----> The Rehearsal is it.

Both events have their own classic moments, ..... as a result, both are essential.

Totally Agree Elvis really stepped up a gear and this is Elvis at his Jumpsuited apex, there may be better shows performed but non filmed It's hard to believe that less than a year prior Elvis filmed "Elvis On Tour" although more gritty, Elvis looked so different! (EOT needs the Deluxe DVD treatment).

I think the Aloha Concert is great although I can't help feeling Elvis is more formal and controlled.

Rehearsal more relaxed and audience orientated.

Agreed and I for one would never give up my copy of the Deluxe DVD

The broadcast show is better IMO. Elvis looks and performs better. No contest! On a trivial point, I much preferred his hair too. He always looked fatter in the face when it was more unkempt.

Being from the U.S. the '73 U.S. version will always be my favorite because that's how I first saw "Aloha". And I love the Hawaiian inserts.

    Re: The rehearsal--I hate it.

  19. #39
Nah! Don't give much about the inserts....

I have a question about this....I noticed that Elvis said he was doing the broadcast show the next night and I read in the notes written by Dave Marsh that he did the broadcast show the very next night, but the dates in the booklet say the rehearsal was on Jan. 12 and the concert was on Jan. 14. I'm confused. Did he do the show the next night or 2 nights later??
    Before Elvis, there was nothing....
