What's your favourite: Aloha or rehearsal?

As I've received the (amazing!) DVD-set of The Aloha, I could finally compare the differences between the Aloha, the rehearsal and the US tv version of The Aloha. During the rehearsal Elvis was much more loose, his hair was different (much blacker). But the 'real' Aloha is the real deal of course.

So what's your favourite Aloha version? The rehearsal? The 2004 re-edited version of the Aloha? Or perhaps the version of the Aloha that was broadcasted in the United States (with the multi-angle shots etc.)?

I have to agree, the rehearsal has a much more relaxed feel to it. I prefer it over the actual Aloha (but that could also be because I've seen it many MANY times )

I probably would have claimed the rehearsal to be my favorite before receiving the new DVD set, because Elvis is a lot looser and seems to connect with the audience more. But I must say the new edit of the broadcast show has been a real eye-opener for me. It more effectively captures the energy, the charisma, and so many little moments that we missed out on before. Now, the new edit of the rehearsal is great too, and I very much enjoy it, but my overall impression of the January 14 show has been enhanced the most by the new DVDs. Another thing (and this was apparent before) is that while Elvis was much looser for the rehearsal show, he fumbled song lyrics on a handful of occasions, Burning Love being the most obvious example. But there were plenty of others too. So it would be hard for me to choose that show over the other given that alone.

One little look from him which wasn't seen until this new edit, and which I thought was noteworthy, happened during Hound Dog. It's right after the first "...crying all the time." It's hard to describe exactly what he did, but I took it as just a brief acknowedgment of his being nobody's fool for singing that song. It seemed to be a reaction to the crowd's response to the opening line, and like he was thinking--though not in a jaded way, as it came with a smile--that it was funny how a relatively silly song which he had first performed 17 years prior, and which he didn't really care to sing much anymore as evidenced by the quick run-through, would still elicit that kind of response. This probably doesn't make any sense, but that quick expression to me showed him as being very in touch and wise.

I am split on this topic. I always fealt that Elvis was more at ease during the rehearsal show, and his appearance was better, but the actual Aloha Show had a better song lineup and he didn't mess up the lyrics to Burning Love.

Having seen all versions now, cut, uncut, edited, re-edited, rehearsal, real thing etc. etc. etc. I'm split.
Some songs he did better in the rehearsal, some in the real thing. His hair looked better in the rehearsal, his face looked better in the real thing. He forgot an awful lot of lyrics in the rehearsal for which he apologized and during the real thing large cue cards were held up so he couldn't mess up, not that much anyway
So it's pretty much 50/50. I prefer my concert fave American Trilogy from the real thing, if only because that one has the best flute solo from all versions that I've heard of this song and Elvis is spot on in his delivery :worthy:

A while back I said I first had to watch both of them and then cast my vote.

    Well, it's that time.

First off I'd like to say that the rehearsal show always has been my favorite, instead of the 1973 broadcast we all know.

But after watching the 2004 edits I definately go for the Aloha 2004 edit, and not the Rehearsal show.
Mainly because of the reasons already given by Cherokee.

Besides that I think the overall edit of the new official Aloha show is a lot better than that of the rehearsal show.

For me it is The Rehearsal, he is much more relaxed, and does a better and more lose version of Steamroller Blues.
Just to bad he sometimes forgot some words to the songs, but musically this was a better show, if you ask me.

I like the Rehearsal better, and its true he seems more relax, the part when he sang 'What Now My Love' was wonderful

My vote has to be The Aloha 2004 edit....
During the rehearsel show he does a better bluessier version of steamroller
But to me he is not totally with it all the time...Burning Love gets a lesser treatment during rehearsel...Welcome to my world lyrics is messed up...He also looks less concentrated and more tired than the actual show...During the real deal show his face looks less puffyer....And no johnny b good... I worship the total package but to me during the Real Aloha...he was more focused sharp and handsome Totally in control of the situation....And at his best when he has to be ON AIRING TIME ...just realize that he knows he?s performing as the first artist in history in front of the whole wide world 1-3 of the worlds population at that time was watching..And then to be in control and never forget his words makes it for me an top notch piece of entertainment

    Aloha or rehearsal?

I have both these tapes, but not the new dvd, so all I can say is that I like the original show better then the rehearsal, but not by much. I think there is something to be said for both of them.

The new edit of the Aloha show is much better then the rehearsal IMO. I read numerous times that the rehearsal show was better. But now after seeing both shows in full, I wonder what those people were smoking
