Conway Twitty
Hank Williams
Ernest Tubb
Eddy Arnold
Todays country singers are not really "country"IMO they are 60s type country rock.
Any of the "real" country singers. Not this new cross-over stuff.
George Jones
Dwight Yoakum
George Strait
Willie Nelson-(Angel Flying to Close to the Ground-Awesome!)
Many others, but you get my drift!
...you're moving on the back roads, by the rivers of my memory and for hours you're just gentle on my mind.
Conway Twitty
Hank Williams

Eddy Arnold

Dwight Yoakam
Brenda Lee
Johnny Cash
Willie Nelson has some nice songs
Roy Orbison
and Jerrry Lee Lewis (but he sings also other stuff than only country)

Even though EP is my all-time favorite singer...no matter what he is singing......I do have a few other faves:
George Jones
Conway Twitty
Loretta Lynn
Tammy Wynette
Merle Haggard
Keith Whitley
Waylon Jennings
Johnny Cash
I like the some of the newer artists too...but when I think of "country"...those are the ones that stand out.
Daddy, I miss you more every day. You will always be my hero..
I have to correct my statement on Billy Gilman though. I actually dislike the majority of his music! I didn't mind him doing Christmas classics or Roy Orbison's 'Crying', but I still see a lot of room for improvement.
I began to like him when he started out, he was on Oprah and sang a snippet of Patsy Cline's (or Willie Nelson's) 'Crazy' and besides from thinking he's so cute I thought it was cool to hear another young person sing older music. But the problem is he doesn't do enough with real country music in his career. Right now his career seems to be at a dead end, but I'm willing to help him out with the help of my husband.
Okay, nuff said. I like those older guys (and some ladies)..
-Willie Nelson
-Johnny Cash
-Merle Haggard
-Jim Reeves
-Roy Orbison
-Patsy Cline
-Dolly Parton
-Lynn Anderson
-Jerry Lee Lewis
-Hank Williams sr.
-Waylon Jennings
-Kris Kristofferson
-Eddy Arnold
-The Carter Family
-The guy singing in Jailhouse Rock's prison (Hunk)
-all those people I've missed
I even have a CD collection with country music from the 1920's. That's very interesting I can tell.

EnigmaticSun,
You're talking my language now. I love all the old country artist. I don't care too much for the new style of country. It seems to be a mixture of something else.
My favorite is:
George Jones
Merle Haggard
Tammy Wynett
Waylon Jennings
Willie Nelson
Johnny Cash
Conway Twitty
Lorette Lynn
The list goes on. Too numerous to name all of them.![]()
Agree, with you Fabian & t-r-o-u-b-l-e, I love the old C&W, too. Who am I kidding? I love most music - except rap. Even some of that. Oh, yeah, I don't like songs where instead of singing they are screaming. But, I'm off topic, now so back to the topic -
Let me add:
Carter Family
Emmy Lou Harris
Roy Clark
Bpb Wills
Just pretend, I'm holding you, and whispering things soft and low.
And think of me, how it's gonna be and just pretend I didn't go
BONNIE RAIT--- I CANT MAKE YOU LOVE ME
ONE OF THE MOST BEAUTIFULL SONGS EVER![]()
LETS BE FRIENDS!
Thank you Lisarose and T-R-O-U-B-L-E, I really appreciate your replies!
It seems strange that, even though I'm not American, I totally understand and enjoy that good old-timey music (that's the way I prefer to call it). It's funny that I have got so much experience with country and American-English, some might not even notice I'm not American.
A person I forgot is Marty Robbins. He had a great voice and meaningful lyrics. He's a country legend to me.
In general, I just like this older music. I have a collection of music from the 1920's, recorded material doesn't go much further back than that.
I don't care for modern country and I don't think such a thing even exists. Country & Western is in an existential crisis - we need some strong characters to change it for the better.
Please don't attack me for liking Billy Gilman. I know he's not really performing country, or in the best case by exception. He likes "Crying", he once did "Heartbreak Hotel", so I think he does enjoy and listen to older music, but is unable or not willing to go for classic country in his career.
I have written some songs myself and I think they're about ready now. Would you care to see the lyrics? I don't mind copyright and such - if some other person would take my song and do a good job, I can only get better, right?
