I think in some ways the songs 'You gave Me A Mountain", "Pieces Of My Life", and "Fairytale" all relate in some way to Elvis' life I think.
"How do I get placed in situations like this? Ah hell, I guess it's all part of showbusiness "~ Elvis in his limo on his way to perform in Omaha, NE on June 19th 1977

Good Lord, I think there's a whole passle of songs he did in the 70's that he related to, or had personal meaning for him and I bet, some in the 60's as well.
Especially from 72/73 on, I think that most did not appeal to him unless he could relate to it somehow. I've always felt that if you want to get a good idea of how Elvis felt in the later years, just listen to the music. Many are autobiographical in a way and certainly a statement of his emotional, psychological and at times, spiritual state.
Got my family, my kids, my books and my music, I'm good, yeah, I'm good.....

Well Leroy, 'prison' is referred in the song not as a prison it self, but he just feels he has been kept in one. his mother died, a heavy burden on his life i'm sure, and after those years of entrapment in his fame that he had begun to feel, i think this is how he described that 'prison'. that baby boy is changed to a baby girl, which is Lisa Marie. just switch that around and you got the story of Elvis's life, plus as the words say, he never did climb that mountain

but i'll have to say, i've been thinking on the emphasis of the lyrics of 'Pieces of my life', and i think it would come a 2nd after Mountain as his most autobiographical song

If Elvis was in a "prison" at that point of his life - I fear it was largely one of his own making.

I have a hard time comparing Elvis to the character portrayed in "You Gave Me a Mountain". I don't see the similarities, other than just generally, Elvis was having a hard time climbing the mountain of life and its' trials.
"I can't see my reflection in the water. I can't speak the sounds that show no pain. I can't hear the echo of my footsteps. I can't remember the sound of my own name" - Tomorrow Is A Long Time

So, in other words, from the lyrical perspective, Elvis saw his own funeral ?

    Please elaborate ...

Here are the lyrics to long black limousine

    Long, Black Limousine

There's a long line of mourners

    Driving down our little street

Their fancy cars are such a sight to see, oh yea

They're all rich friends who knew you in the scene

And now they've finally brought you

    Brought you home to me

When you left you know you told me

That some day you'd be returnin'

In a fancy car, all the town to see, oh yea,

Well now everyone is watching you

You finally had your dream, yea

You're ridin' in a long black limousine

You know the papers told of how you lost your life, oh yea

The party, the party and the fatal crash that night

Well the race along the highway, oh the curve you didn't see

When you're riding in that long black limousine

Through tear filled eyes I watch as you pass by oh yea

A chauffeur, a chauffeur at the wheel dressed up so fine

Well I never, I never, never, never

Oh my heart, all my dreams yea, they're with you

    In that long black limousine

i agree with this when i hear some of the songs i feel like crying cos you could see the life behind the songs thats what made elvis so special to know the man is to know the music cos then you know what or why he is singing that song

Robman your observation is quite valid and I just share your vision and I will never blame you for your poor arithmetics because no one is perfect. I just hope people learn to admit mistake of others and criticize them in a nice way.
