I wanted a thread about this wonderful, beautiful lady who I love.
How Elvis`s life would have been different if she had survived.
She had lived a very hard life in the depression etc.
I think Elvis always felt bad that he wasn`t able to give her more of an easy life before she died.
Having never heard her voice until a couple of years ago when I heard the interview done at Tupelo Fairgrounds in 1956 her voice was so sweet and high-pitched I just adored her.

Joanne, I totally agree with you that Elvis' life would have been totally different had Gladys lived. I think she was the only person who could have gotten through to him regarding getting rid of the Colonel and the drugs.

I think she had some serious emotional problems with separation anxieties towards Elvis but I also think she was basically a good loving mother. I'm sure they've found each other and that things are as they should have been for both of them now.

I think she inadvertently transferred many of her fears onto her son -- but, by the same measure, you'd be hard-pressed to find a more loving or considerate woman on this Earth (now or then). And Elvis also took many of her virtues -- namely, respect and humility -- with him.

Elvis was her only child and she loved him, and he loved her, for all of time. I think it went wrong for the both of them -- Gladys in 2/3 years; Elvis in 20 -- when Elvis' fame and his conscription into the army kept them apart. It's enormously sad when you think about it.

Could she have helped Elvis get rid of the Colonel and those drugs? Of ALL the people in Elvis' life, if anyone could have done it, she could. We'll never know. I think things would have been very different if she'd lived.

I think this is so true! He always stated that he lost everything when Gladys passed away...I wonder how things would have been for him had she lived longer...I'm think her death affected his whole life...

Didn't Gladys and Vernon have a small part in Elvis' movie Loving You?
I can't recall, but did they have a speaking part? I've never heard her voice, but I would love to here what she would have had to say....

Yes, they were both in the audience when Elvis is singing "Loving You'' I think.
"How do I get placed in situations like this? Ah hell, I guess it's all part of showbusiness "~ Elvis in his limo on his way to perform in Omaha, NE on June 19th 1977

They're in the audience when he is singing " Got alot of livin to do" and clapping. Gladys is on the end. Apparantley, after Gladys died, Elvis refused to ever watch this film again.

I really liked Gladys and feel she, although a bit overprotective, truly loved her son. She did, after all, lose one which does make a mother cling more. I'm over protective of my kids and I have two. I also think that her initial instincts about the Colonel were right. But, would Elvis have gotten as famous without him? Who knows. I do beleive that Elvis did inherit fears and insecurities from her. But, looking at the time, where they lived, their life, it seems natural. The story is a bit sad and I beleive Elvis never got over it, not even a little.
Got my family, my kids, my books and my music, I'm good, yeah, I'm good.....

Yes, they had such a hard life, always struggling moneywise before Elvis became big! I don't think he ever got over it either...I think he wanted to give Gladys everything that she never had before, but then she passed away so young...Isn't there a book called Elvis and Gladys? Has anyone heard of it or read it?

I heard about that book but I've never read it...it could be interesting to know more about their relationship.
Elvis loved both his parents and wanted to do a lot for them after he started to be famous....but the relationship with his mother was so special that I'm sure with her presence he could have done different choices in life.....
