I was at work , I was the manager of a bakery store and was ringing out a customer when I thought I heard over the store radio, "ing of Rock in Roll dead at 42"... I hoped I had heard wrong, or maybe it was anyother rock pioneer(as many claim to be the King) I finished with the customer and told my clerk I was going to the desk, the phone was ringing before I entered the office. It was a former employee asking if I had heard. I said Yes and knew then he was gone. I got a total of 4 calls in an hour all asking if I knew. I went home and watched all the news you could back then. (No CNN nor cable all news networks) It was a horrible time.

Got my family, my kids, my books and my music, I'm good, yeah, I'm good.....

We cried like we had lost a family member. His picture was framed and placed on top of the piano like one more member of the family. The news on Tv,the radio, the people talking about it was too much for us girls.I remember that my dad took us to the park and it did'nt help. That night we watch TTWlS and God he was beautiful. To think he was gone forever! We were not allowed to watch the funeral.Im was glad. Two months after we got to see the especial in NBC.Vernon was hurting so bad that we cried again.
