I don't recall any meetings after the Sun years but that does not mean they did not see each other here and there.
I was wondering if anyone knew if Elvis and Johnny ever met, corresponded or communicated in any way after their stint at Sun Records? I've seen pictures of them during the Sun days and after, when Elvis visited Sun Records that time, but have not heard of anything else. Thanks!

In the Memphis-Mafia book it is stated, that Elvis thought Johnny Cash was jealous of his success. There is a story that Johnny introduced Carl Perkins in his tv show and said, that he was the man who should be credited for "Blue Suede Shoes", not Elvis. The king saw it on tv and supposingly said something like "...that jealous sob". I guess Elvis thought, Johnny had a problem with the fact, that he had a so much more success than Mr. Cash. I personally don't think that Johnny Cash was jealous of Elvis.
I don't think so either.
Cash also did a nice and very funny Elvis impersonation in those early years. The name of that particular show slipped my mind, but I'm sure someone here knows what I mean.
I believe there is a pic around with Elvis and Cash after the Sun sessions, so a little later in time...

Well in a way Carl Perkins is responsible for Blue Suede Shoes since he wrote it and had it out before Elvis. He was in a serious car wreck just after his single of BSS hit the charts. If he had not been sidelined for months and out of sight, could have promoted it better. Elvis then covered it and Carl enjoyed years of royalties for Elvis having cut the song and was greatful that he had.
In the late `80`s and middle `90`s..we did trips to Graceland and of course Nashville and everytime while in Nashville we did a little stop to ``The House Of Cash`` (Johnny Cash` home) and we met him 3 times and his wife many times..always good words for Elvis and we don`t know how many times they saw each other in the `60`s and `70`s and nobody knew about it except their own entourage. This guy was pretty cool and beleive me he never said a word
againts Elvis.
Have a nice day, bogarcon

Thanks for the replies. Yes, it did seem Johnny was always nice when asked. I heard that he defended Elvis on a religious TV show some time back and he talked about him a bit during a show/interview I saw from Denmark in, I believe, 1994. I like Johnny, a great man I believe!

Unless it's a direct quote from EP himself, I take what certain people say, ( such as the MM ), with a grain of salt.Originally Posted by orwell1976
I also met Johnny before he passed. I'm a big fan of the Sun Studio days and I have made an effort over the years to go to events where Sun guys were gonna be. I met Johnny, I asked him what he thought about Elvis and he said "Elvis was a friend of mine, I miss him" . Short and to the point .
I also once got to meet the late great Carl Perkins, and someone before me was getting something signed and he said to Perkins "I love your version of Blue suede shoes way better then Elvis version", and Carl said Thank you very much nice to meet you. I then said, Did you mind Elvis recording the song . Without hesitation Carl Perkins said "Heck no, I made a lot more Money off of Elvis singing the song then I ever made when I did" He also said Elvis was a friend and there wasn't any jealousy because they were friends and Elvis was one of his biggest supporters. He said Elvis used to play jokes on him but didn't elaborate before I had to move on for the next person. This was at an event at the Country Music Hall of Fame.
I've never been lucky enough to speak with Jerry Lee Lewis yet, but I have some questions I'd like to ask him someday as well , because I suspect he was fond of Elvis as well but the press likes to play it up like He didn't like Elvis. They all played together at Sun, they started it all, I can't believe they hated each other unless I hear it from them. Jerry Lee is the only Million dollar quartet guy left.

Elvis and J.R. Cash...my two favorite guys.
I'm trying to remember where I read that at some point around 1970 Elvis actually counseled Johnny on his marriage and had a positive effect on him in that way. If true, it's sure a shame that Elvis couldn't advise successfully himself in that regard.
Anyway, I thought I'd post these photos. The second is a less commonly seen pic from the Million Dollar Quartet session, taken just before or after the one you more often see, pictured last, colorized.
...you won't forget me when I go.

I don't know if this has been said, yet. I believe when Larry King was doing a show with Priscilla that coming back from the commercial breaks there would be a clip of Larry talking to someone he had interviewed that new Elvis. One was a short clip of him asking Johnny Cash when he was on his show once about him knowing Elvis. Johnny Cash was older at this time but not at the very late stage in his life.
Johnny had all good things to say about Elvis. Evidently, there were a few of them doing shows together early in Elvis and Johnny's careers. It might have been the Louisiana Hayride. Johnny said when Elvis took the stage even the other performers wanted to watch him on stage because he was so exciting to watch.
That's the only thing I've heard Johnny Cash say about Elvis. All good stuff.

I was also reading on another thread that Johnny was on some religious show and the interviewer said something to the effect "Well Johnny, it was lucky you had Jesus to help you out with the drugs and all, not so with Elvis huh?" and apparently Johnny said something like "You're absolutely wrong, If anything, Elvis was probably closer to God than I'll ever be. That has nothing to do with it"
Way to go Johnny!

I wanted to say something that I haven't read here, yet. A lot of you have probably heard of the incident. Jerry Lee busted his car through the gates of Graceland once, supposedly drunk or something, and got out of the car hollering for Elvis to come out. I think this was after his career started to decline. He wasn't a happy camper. I haven't heard much about Jerry Lee lately.
My Dad did a show with Jerry Lee's cousin, Mickey Gilley, but I never saw Jerry Lee.

I wish I could recall the exact videos but I've heard him say good things about Elvis and make comments that would make some of you mad as well but that IMO weren't that bad, even then if you read between the lines you can see he was a guy that Knew Elvis the man, before Elvis was King, he wasn't in awe of the King but liked the man and had some private times with him that us fans were never lucky enough to get . There was a unique bond with those Sun Guys , they with Elvis leading the way did something special that changed the world . Elvis covered Carl Perkins and Jerry Lee's songs up until the end in concert .
I like this thread. I love all of the Sun guys, especially Johnny Cash (oh well and Elvis too, but that's obvious lol)
Hey
I read a few books about the "Sun Guys" including Roy Orbison (which Elvis called the greatest singer in the world).
They were always very close, but we all know that Elvis left and kinda "broke away" from them I clearly recall from Cash's autobio him saying "we were very disappointed when Elvis closed up his world" and also mentioned their fear of being "turned back at the gates of Graceland" however Cash also mentions the occasional phone calls and xmas greeting cards exchanged among them and their accidental meetings when one was closing Vegas and the other opening.
Carl Perkins went on the road with Cash as a band member and a Solo performer that is after he gave up the bottle after the car accident and after the death of the original members of his own band died (the band members were Perkins' brothers). Carl also said that he went to an Elvis concert in 1976 and was moved to tears by the site of his friend! Perkins ofcourse has to be credited as the story of Blue Suede Shoes is interesting, it goes...while Johnny Cash was in the army one of his buddies wore his combat shoes but pretended they were blue suede telling eveybody "dont you step on my blue suede shoes!" Perkins wrote the song and his version reached #2 on the charts.
Jerry Lee Lewis is and will always be the wild child of Rock N' Roll nobody can forget his infomous marriages (one was to his 13 year old cousin!!) but also remaind close to Cash Perkins and Orbison the Graceland incident is explained well in his sister's book "The Devil, Me and Jerry Lee" who sang back up for her brother she writes "Jerry Lee admitted to me that he had been partyin' and drinkin' and that he was a little bit out of it,but he swore his intentions were good. He's very misunderstood, you see. It's a shame really." She also writes "I believe, really and truly, that the people who were associated with Elvis at that time were trying to manipulate him. He was supporting all of them financially, and it was in their best interest to keep him isolated." Linda Gail continues, "Jerry really had no motive to lie. Why would he leave a place where he was havin' a perfectly good time to go down to Elvis' house and make a scene? It just doesn't make any sense. He had his whole entourage with him, and a couple of girlfriends, and they were havin' a great time. There was no reason for him to go down there other than that he was concerned for his friend." Lisa Marie also attended a Jerry Lee concert in the 1980s and had a picture taken, Jerry Lee was arrested but let go the next morning and the gun he waved at the gates was a WWII gun and it didnt work!! Jerry Lee has also released a great tribute album to his great lost friends called "The Last Man Standing"
All in all they were great friends with extreamly close family bonds their kids were friends and they also lived close by in Hendersonville, TN. They ( Perkins, Cash, Lewis and Orbison) recorded an album on the 30th ann.that was in 1986 of the Million Dollar Quartet (The Class of '55: the Rock N' Roll Home Coming) with an amazing song for Elvis called "We Remember the King" check it out on youtube this vid is from a TV special of the same title: [YT]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lgPsUfGTf6s[/YT]
