    the Colonel`s newsletter

this is our first letter (January `74) from Colonel` office received at the club for our newsletter.

    Dear Friends:
It`s been several months since we`ve written, but now it`s time to start a New Year and we want to take this opportunity to thank you for making 1973 another really gret year.
Elvis wishes to express his sincere thanks to each of you for all your beautiful cards, messages, gifts, flowers and most of all your prayers during his convalescence. He is feeling fine and is most anxious to get back to work.
His first appearance of the New Year will be at the Las vegas Hilton Hotel starting January 26th thru February 9th 1974. On March 3rd he will be appearing at the Houston Astrodome during the Houston Livestock and Rodeo Show. As you know, we do not handle tickets or reservations for any of Elvis` personal appearances so you can save much time by directing your requests to the Auditorium or Hotel where Elvis is to appear. The reaction to Elvis` latest LP album - ``ELVIS-RAISED ON ROCK`` - APL1-0388 has been great and a new single sahould be released soon.
Elvis wants you all to know how much he appreciates your continued loyaltiy and support through these many years. Your enthusiasm and dedication is to Elvis what gasoline is to a car - it gives him his ``GO-POWER``, and though there may be shortage of gasoline, there seems to be no shortage of Elvis fans all over the world who continue to work so tireless to keep him on top.

For this he is most grateful and sends his sincere appreciation to you. Each time he stops to count his blessings and reflect on his life, he realizes just how fortunate he has been and feels very humble. He knows that without you, his faithful friends and fans, his success would never have been possible. If it weren`t for his fans he may still be driving a truck at 50 miles and hour and running out of gas!
There are no plans at this time for a tour and we cannot say just what effect the gasoline shortage will have, but if a tour is scheduled we will, of course, advise you. For the many fans who request Elvis`tour schedule for the entire year we wish to advise this is not possible, they are never planned that far in advance. We would also like to add that a matter of policy we do not accept Registered, Insured or Certified mail, and because of the thousands of requests received each week there is no way Colonel Parker can arrange personal meetings with Elvis.

On behalf of Elvis, Colonel Parker, Mr. Diskin and the entire staff, we wish to extend to you and those you love a very Special Holiday Greeting. May the joy and happiness of Christmas remain with you throughout the New Year. We hope 1974 will be as good to you as you have been to Elvis.

    Sincerly,
    Colonel Parker`s Office

    HAVE A NICE DAY, BOGARCON

Hello again, great newsletter to read form January 1974. Guess they had a gas shortage problem then too..... (ha ha) I am sure the fans would never let our Elvis run out of gas. (Even if he was with us today!!)

In 1973 we had the Oil embargo by the Middle eastern oil countries. At the start of 1973 I recall gas at about 35 cents a gallon. In December 73 it was at 69 cents in my area. In 74 was near 80 cents. We in America were shell shocked by this and it did stop a lot of travel. Now 80 cents a gallon seems a bargain.
