news from 1978 fan club mag

Here is a little bit from the club mag from 1978..
    LEGITIMATE ELVIS? SOME SAY YES-
A 45 rpm single now being released that claims to be Elvis` first record is causing a storm of action and reaction in Nashville now. It`s claimed to be an Elvis disc pre-dating his Sun Records days. The song, ``TELL ME PRETTY BABY``, has bee halled as definitely Elvis and definitely not Elvis by various music industry figures.

According to the story line, the recording was made in January or February, 1954, prior to Elvis` signing with Sun Records in July of `54 in Phoenix, Arizona, at Audio Recorders, a studio no longer in business.

Elvis was passing through Phoenix looking for work and ran into a local group, the Red Dots. He was invited to sit in with the band, and then invited to the studio the following day for a demo session on some material Pete Falco, a member of the group, had written. Elvis recorded three songs, one of which was ``Tell Me Pretty Baby``, and reluctantly accepted $15.00.

An affidavit attesting to this fact has been signed by Falco, as has one by Don Reese of Dallas, a former deejay who was present at the session.

Again, according to the story line, Falco sent the song to various record companies, and was told to tighten it up for comsideration. Falco didn`t know how to contact Elvis, so the tape was shelved.

Shelby Singleton, a Nashville producer and label owner who has recently done battle with RCA records over some Elvis Sun Records sessions, beleive Elvis was never in Arizona at the time the recording was claimed to have taken place. ``I think it`s a crock!`` says Scotty Moore, who was Elvis` first manager.

In the meantime, Cin-Kay Distributing of Nashville has taken on the worldwide distribution and promotion of the release on the Elvis Classic Label, and reports of 15,000 records per day are being pressed. RCA is currently looking into the situation.
