There seems to be debate over whether that is taken from the the new edit or the original broadcast (both being from the new release, of course).

I hope it is the latter, because when I watched it a couple days ago at work, I don't remember noticing new camera angles.

Since it was promoted as being like watching a whole new special, I really hope that's the case.

On another board someone argued that the new edit should not employ new camera angles just for the sake of our using new camera angles, but the best should be chosen in each case.

I'm not sure if I agree with that though, since we have the original edit. I guess it's a matter of the intended concept of the new edit; should it be the ultimate new Aloha special, or one that is as different as possible than the original?

I'm not complaining though. Either way, this should be a very exciting DVD set. The shows are complete, and we're getting all the helicopter arrival footage plus all the post-broadcast performances. I'm happy.

It looks like the new edit i.m.o. and not the actual broadcast.
The reason I think so is because of the Blue Suede Shoes part. This clip does not feature the rapid camera changes as seen on the Aloha version we all know.

It's too bad this clip does not contain more surprises, like the 68 clip did.

I agree with you. I'm happy though that we get the full Aloha + rehearsal in best audio and picture quality. And of course we already knew that there was just a tiny bit of footage recorded that hadn't already been used fr the broadcast.

It's a totally different project than the '68 special. So fortunately we will get what we (silently) expected (nothing more, nothing less). Still looking forward to be able to put this release between all my other Elvis stuff.

When a "Elvis On Tour" DVD would have been announced, then th?t would make me excited (as hell). Because that could be compared with the 68 special and TTWII. Much more (unused) footage had been recorded for that special. And.... o well, I'm daydreaming again

I think the Comback is going to suprise us more than the Aloha.

insted of a re-make of the aloha they better had given us On Tour - Special DVD set.

    That's my opinion.

Thats true Steve, i have Aloha on 3-4 different video tapes, complete and not complete "missing a few songs, Johnny B.Good......" So i am with you Steve, a dvd of Elvis on Tour would make me want to "Walk a block in your socks"

Sorry, I don?t agree. Even if they had released a new ON TOUR version, which would be great, I would be still waiting for the definitive ALOHA dvd set. We?re talking about Elvis at his best - at least vocally - and the show is history.
Of course, I saw hundred times the original video tape and there is not so much material like with the 68 COMEBACK, but an uncut release of that 1973 concert is to me wonderful and pretty exciting. I must also say that i didn?t buy the first DVD version as it was incomplete so let me tell you that, on june 17th (I live in Spain : lucky i am!), i?ll be there at 9 AM to take it the first!!!

    Ok Jeanno,

i agre, but the aloha is stil the same show.
and on tour if you see how many tapes the got from 1972, you go grazy
you see elvis behid stage having fun with joe, red ........
on stage like you never seen elvis before, joking puting his finger up, and many many more.....
so insted of giving us somthing we all know, give us somthing we never seen before.

OK that?s true : to see elvis rehearsing and backstage must be very cool - since there is so little footage of that in the original version -. Also, the hampton roads show should be released in his complete as it shows elvis in a pretty good mood.
But the Aloha is, to my point of view, elvis?peak. I remember the first time i saw it : he looked so thin and what a performance! Vocally, I was amazed. I could see it... sorry, i will see it a hundred times more! It?s just a single hit moment in his carreer, just like the 68 COMEBACK. It?s a moment in time that had to be improved. Now it is done, i hope they will do the same thing with ON TOUR and ELVIS 56.

I just saw the trailer for ALOHA and was hoping we'd see a little bit of the unreleased goodies from the new DVD, like a few seconds of the helicopter arrival and/or the post-Aloha recording sessions!!

Oh well....guess I'll have to wait until next Tuesday!!

One thing I did read in an interview with Todd Morgan is that they are particuarly proud of the work they did on FEVER from the ALOHA show....according to Todd, they wanted to reedit the song so that the montage effect was gone and we could all see Elvis teasing the audience, which we couldn't really see in the previous releases because of the split screen format! That sounds pretty neat...

    ONLY 6 MORE DAYS!!!

Sounds cool about Fever. That is something that I definitely thought was lacking about it before: Elvis would make a move that we couldn't really see because of how it was presented, and we'd hear screams from the crowd but not really get the full effect ourselves. Sounds like they recognized that too.

From that clip, what do you all make of the sound? I know that overall sound quality can't really be all that accurately determined from that, but I am mainly wondering what you think of the mix.

On the last Aloha releases, I liked the prominence of Elvis's voice--or, I liked being able to hear Elvis so well, I should say (that's not being redundant if you follow my thinking), but not how that came at the price of hardly hearing some of the other voices and instrumentation.

Nowhere was this flaw more apparent than on Trilogy, when Elvis said, "Sing it, fellas," and we then heard, "Oh, I wish I was in Dixie, away, away..."After that, I half expected Elvis to say, "Fellas, I can't hear you," or off-mike to the sound people, "Turn them up, !" Kidding, of course. But I guarantee you that Elvis would not have wanted the mix to turn out that way; he would not have approved it.

If you compare the bombastic endings of that song and What Now My Love from that '98 (is that right?) release to the one prior, you will hear that some of the power was lost.

As an Elvis fan, someone who holds the sound of his voice in such high esteem, I am sort of torn between wanting to hear it as well as possible and hearing it the way it should sound, which is blended better with the other instruments and voices. In the end, I think the latter is most important.

It's not that Elvis was insecure about his voice or needed other voices to cover up any shortcomings of his own (as evidenced by the last release), but he did want everyone to be heard and liked the sound of that great range of voices with his own. Not to mention the band.

Opinions/interpretations of the clip in this regard?

I wonder if they are going to put the Aloha trailer on the '68 Special and vice versa? This would be a good incentive to buy the other one if you have only bought one.

I couldn't agree with you more buddy!! As much as I would LOVE to have Elvis' voice right up front in the mix, I would much rather enjoy the music knowing I am listening to it the way Elvis wanted it to sound!! Even if that means his voice being mixed in with the other vocalists!!

I thought it was a downright shame that the back-up vocalists were so low in the sound mix on the last VHS release of ALOHA!!! That certainly would not have been the way Elvis would have wanted it, and being the perfectionist I am, I want to hear it just as Elvis wanted to hear it!!

    GREAT THOUGHTS/QUESTION BOBBY!!

    Thanks, Mike.

OK, forget that preview clip. Can anyone who has watched the set now speak to this?

If not, I guess I'll find out for myself soon enough.

Well pal, as you and I discussed the other night when I called you, the back-up vocalists are still much too low in the mix, in my opinion!! ESPECIALLY during the solo of AMERICAN TRILOGY!!!

It truly is a shame that RCA/EPE didn't fix this problem on the new DVD set for ALOHA!! As far as I can tell, this is really the only negative thing I can find with the new set!! I would honestly have given this set a clear-cut rating of "10" if it weren't for this issue! But, even with the issue, I would have to give the new set a solid "9.5" I think!!
