i am a huge fan of 'elvis: that's the way it is' (special edition) and it was the first dvd i bought of elvis but there are lots of songs featured in the trailer that aren't on the dvd. does anyone know if it's still possible to buy the original version (in the uk)? i think elvis looks great in 1970... him here and in the 50s are when he looks best in my opinion... love the sideburns and hair... and he's electrifying on stage- him singing poke salad annie, suspicious minds and you lost that lovin' feeling is AMAZING...
Having watched the special edition TTWII when you watch the original is does look quite dated but at the same time it has a certain charm of its own and it should still be available to buy for the fans who want it.
You might be able to get a copy on ebay.
The only place where I think you might beable to get the original is
ebay.I have got it on dvd.....it's great to have as they missed out
some of the songs from the special edition version.Which I found
disappointing.
One negative point of the special edition....they canceled "Bridge over Troubled Water"

Sweet Caroline is another one I think....I'll have to take another look.
Also Suspicious Minds is a different version than the one on the original.

Not only that. As I recall there's a cut in a song (I think it was "You've Lost That Loving Feeling) which is from two cuts. When he turned around after the intro he's wearing a different suit.
I do have the original "That's The Way It Is" on VHS. I'm going to try to put it on DVD if the quality is fair enough.

i won the orginal ttwii video for ?0.99 (lol) on sunday and watched it today. it's amazing!
i thought that "bridge over troubled water" was so beautifully sung... as was "i've lost you", "just can't help believing", "sweet caroline" and so many others! there were also lots of funny parts (like the microphones). the only problem i have with it are the interviews with fans- i want to watch elvis! i thought that the one about the bike and elvis impersonators was particularly unnecessary.
overall i'm SO pleased i got it! it's so different from the 2001 edition. i love it just as much as ttwii se and that's my favourite elvis dvd...
also... i noticed in this film that he went into the crowd on a different occasion from love me tender. on ttwii se they seemed to imply that he only walked through the crowd once, during LMT. does anyone know how many times he did venture off the stage? both scenes were brilliant moments and i think emphasised just how greatly he cared about his fans.
The ending of Suspicious Minds from the original was the greatest finishing of a song I've ever seen. Why they switched that along with leaving out key songs is beyond me.
I got too fed up with one not having one thing I liked, the other version, the same, So I made my own edit out of the original version, the new version, the Lost performances and the outtake dvds. It's definately not professional editing, pretty rough actually, but it has all the stuff I like from all that's out there at the moment. You can get all versions on ebay if you can settle for the original on vhs.

A few weeks ago I bought a copy of a double release of "Aloha From Hawaii" and "That's The Way It Is" on e-bay. It's an original production and it was available just for a short time. Here you can see the original version of TTWII. It's very interesting to see the original movie, but if you have seen the SE, the quality of the picture and the sound seem just rotten.
One of the advantages to living on this side of the "Pond" was that at the time of release of TTWII(SE) it debuted On Turner Classic Movies with a special intro from Priscilla. At the conclusion of the film the footage of Bridge Over Troubled Water; I Just Can't Help Believin'; Sweet Caroline and I've Lost You was shown. This was done for just this one night only. Of course, I had my VCR(remember those?) running. Still have the tape.
FYI: I prefer the original version of the film. The SE has turned it into a concert film which was not the original purpose.
I prefer the SE. But they should have included the original film for "historic" reasons. You have to see the original version the realize what it was all about back in 1970. As you said, it's turned into a concert film. A real SE version would have been better (The old film with upgraded picture and sound and a bonus disc with additional footage).
That's been my problem as well. The only time I saw the old version was in 1998, August 16th, on TNT Classic Movies channel (I don't know if this channel is still there). I got to see it by accident - later I tried to get it on a video, but they already sent me the Special Edition, saying that the old version is no longer available. I do remember many more funny scenes, as well as more songs from the old version. Can't get it on Ebay, because the debit card that I have is not available there. I just keep waiting for it to some time get back to normal market again.
I saw the original release in a theater in 1970 and my friends and I just caught the tail end of TTWII thru the door before they cleared the theater for the next audience. I can't express how amazed we were as he ended Can't Help Falling In Love, pounding his arms out and twirling around, then dropping to his knee arms outstretched. My friends were not true Elvis fans but loved this movie. We watched it twice by kinda hiding when they cleared after our showing. Fantastic on a big screen.
I got the original on VHS and I transfered it onto DVD. I like it really but it is not better than the SE. They should of made a 2 disc and have the original on disc one and the newer version on disc two.
