    Did Elvis use make up?

I'm wondering if Elvis used make up on or offstage in the 50's or in the 70's.
In Albert Goldman's book it's mentioned some times that he wore make up when he was young to make himself more sexy, but Elvis himself says in Elvis in Concert '77 that he had never worn make up on stage. But in July '75 on many pics you can see that he has strong masquara on his eyes. So what's reality? I too think that E used makeup from his early days regarding many photos of him. Any comments?

Question No.2.: In the book "Elvis by the Presleys" there's a picture of a bottle of Jovan Musk Oil. Did Elvis use that in the 50's?

Elvis definitely used makeup on his eyes to make them look "darker and "sexier" in the 1950s and there are pictures were you can really see this. Dont really know if he did this in the 1970s or not, , but I have some some pics of him where he looks darker around the eyes.
Here's a pic of him in the 70s that makes me think he did.

Yes, Elvis used make up. He dyed his hair since 1957 and also had to do his eyebrows and lashed. When he remarked he never used make up in 1977 he probabably meant on his skin.
During a lot of shows in 1976 he didn't use mascara and it made him look strange.

In june 1975 it seems that Elvis had re-discoverd mascara....

he definitely wore a bit of eye liner in the 50s and some in the 70s but if it helped to make him look even more, if thats possible, drop dead gorgeous then the more the better i say! he's soooo beautiful in the 50s....

Yes, I guess he didn't use makeup in 1976 from October to December 31 and he definetley looks strange. Do you know why was that? And on his spring tour in 1957 he wore heavy mascara. It's too much I think. Did he use make up in his private life? And what about the Jovan Musk Oil I mentioned in my first thread?

    Did Elvis use make up?

Yes!He did use make up on and off stage. He used to dyed his eyebrows black to match his jetblack hair.Eventually the use of this chimical led to eye infection and he stop using it during the late 76-77.If you notice he looks much pail and his eyebrows don't match his black hair.Still he looks gorgeous.

I added two pictures. You can tell the diference.Of course we know that he changed physically. The weight, his illness,he lost interesting in his aperiance.I have one interview with Joe Esposito from QVC were he says Elvis din't even want to take a bath. This is typical of someone who is sufering from sevear depression.Poor guyHonestly,I don't think he was really happy

Yes, Elvis surly worked to brake down many barriers - one for men being able to wear makeup. Most of the times he didn't to it so it would look good but go unnoticed - if society look at guys that wear make-up in a weird way today, imagine 50 years ago.

I know that there are some photos of Elvis wearing lipstick somewhere, but none that I have seen. Maybe one of you guys have one?

Anyway, I was trying to find a good example of Elvis wearing make up in the 50's and choose these two. On the first one (which I think is from 1954) Elvis looks like I will in the morning if I forget to take of my make up. On the next one, which is from his last studio session in the 50's, you can clearly see his eye-liner. Perhaps he has been missing being able wearing eye-liner and mascara while at basic training.

Thanks ayda for posting the picture of Elvis onstage, without make up. I never knew that before, but I can now see how obvious the difference is.

There are some photos of Elvis in the Army in which I swear it looks like he's wearing his makeup!

At any rate, he definitely wore it to varying degrees and in different ways throughout his life, both on and offstage.

Elvis wore make up... He looked awesome in the 50s. By the way, I think the "king" had cute-long-eyelashes. And mascara... made him look even more fantastic.
Let the stars fade and fall, and I won't care at all, as long as I have you.

As someone who has suffered from depression I can understand that. You feel so bad that you can`t find the strength to get out of bed in the morning let alone do anything else that is why Elvis is to be admired in my eyes because he still continued getting on that stage night after night when it was obviously very hard for him.

Yes he does look strange in 1976 and not his usual self. I always thought this was because he was ill and depressed as he had that far away look in his eyes.

Are there any pictures of him earlier than 1976 without makeup?
Just to see if he looked just as good without makeup.

...was Elvis going for the Heavy Metal/Goth look?? any background? It's more of an unusual picture--I've seen it before, and thought it was an impersonator....

    Thanks!

I actually think that's one of the better pictures from that period.

I think he often wore lip balm. The Girl's Guide to Elvis reveals this and covers his other uses of makeup (as well as his attitudes towards it in general).

One thing all hair dye products tell you NOT to do is dye your eyebrows. Elvis broke this golden rule! And dyes were more primitive and probably even more volatile back then. I'm not entirely surprised he ended up with eye trouble later on.
