Yes, as a matter of fact Vernon did spent time in jail.

Back in 1937, when Elvis was about two years old, Vernon and Gladys' brother Travis Smith and a friend of theirs called Lether Gable, were accused of creating a false cheque and take the money.

Vernon had sold a pig to Orville Bean, the guy who lend him money for building his house. When Bean paid with a four dollar cheque, Vernon for some reason felt he earned more and changed the amount to fourteen.

Bean got angry and all three of them went to trial. Vernon was sentenced to three years in Parchman Farm, Mississippi state prison.

    Hope this clears things up,

And this also is one of the reasons Elvis was so close to his mother and why she was so overprotective towards him. Imagine how music history could have been when Vernon didn't go to jail.

By most accounts, ............. Vernon did it to feed his family.

Jesse Presley, Vernon's father, bailed one of the others out, ............ but not Vernon (so as to teach him a lesson).

Jesse was also a womanizer, and a drunk.

There was no lost love between Elvis & his paternal grandfather (but he was, nevertheless, kind & cordial out of respect).

EP brought his paternal grandmother to live with him for the remainder of her living days.

Minnie Mae (Dodger) was Jesse's first wife. Yes, she is also Vernon's mother.

Thanks for the complete story all I had heard was that Vernon had spent time in jail for passing a bad check.
