    Alternate 70's setlists

    Hi all,
    Just an opinion...
    With a gamma of songs Elvis had, he did not use them in his concerts...
    My question...witch songs would you put in the concertsets...
    Here are mine...

    -Long Lonely Highway
    -He Touched Me
    -Amazing Grace
    -Memphis Tennessee
    -Pieces of My Life
    -Susan When She tried
    -Long Black Limousine
    -Let Us Pray
    -King Creole
    -Gentle on My Mind
    -I'll Never know
    -Guitar Man
    -Tomorrow Never Comes

    this is one of my fave subjects. i would have liked for E to mix it up a bit. sing songs from his latest albums, not just from time to time, but through out his tour setlist and through out his concerts. though for example susan when she tried would not have really have been a regular song for the concerts, just would'nt suit it

    i would've liked to have seen more alternate openers than there were. some of my faves would've been Memphis Tennessee (which was indeed picked for the vegas comeback, but rejected), Nightrider would've set the scene perfectly for a concert

    also, Elvis had many successful 50s rejects put in his concerts eg my baby left me, trying to get to you. i would've liked to have seen a mixed medley of those with his successful hits. i would've personally loved to have heard gonna get back home somehow in concert!

    YES!, You're so right. I agree with you, Scott. I would have loved to listen a medley of (well, first: I would have loved to listen a live Elvis' concert ) 50s songs. You know I love those years! The "king" had so many songs... is hard to choose between them.

    GREAT LIST AND QUESTION JOHAN!!!

    Believe it or not, a couple of the songs on your list Elvis actually DID perform live!! Elvis performed MEMPHIS, TENNESSEE once or twice in Las Vegas in 1973, and PIECES OF MY LIFE was done a couple of times in Asheville, NC. in 1975.

    I have to agree with Scott's comments that it would have been nice for Elvis to sing songs from his latest album in concert more often, instead of just the current single (like he did with T-R-O-U-B-L-E in 1975). Yes, Elvis did perform AND I LOVE YOU SO along with FAIRYTALE quite often from 1975 until the end of his lifetime, and he also did PIECES OF MY LIFE a couple of times (as mentioned above) and SHAKE A HAND (also from the Asheville '75 shows) as well. But there were some GREAT songs from the PROMISED LAND and FROM ELVIS PRESLEY BOULEVARD, MEMPHIS TENNESSEE albums that he just never attempted to do in concert, and that is a shame...they would have made GREAT concert songs!!!

    As for Elvis' 1950's songs, there were just so many, I don't even know where to start. But it would have been nice to include more of them, and to mix them up (perhaps in a medley, again as Scott suggested!) more often, instead of relying on the standard HOUND DOG, JAILHOUSE ROCK, (LET ME BE YOUR) TEDDY BEAR/DON'T BE CRUEL, etc. all the time. Great songs like I GOT STUNG, (NOW AND THEN THERE'S) A FOOL SUCH AS I, THAT'S WHEN YOUR HEARTACHES BEGIN, I BEG OF YOU and DON'T would have been great inclusions once in a while for sure!!!

    A Mess of Blues would have been great! We Can MaKe The Morning live at the Madison Square Garden in 72 so cool, that last one was a great song, not very well known, even between fans...

    I think a good setlist would have been a mix of these ingredients:

    * a few songs from his recent albums
    * a few 'greatest hits' songs
    * a few gospels
    * just a few covers

    A concert should be a way to enjoy old songs, discover new ones and hear what the artist inspires (gospel/covers).

    It's a shame that Elvis limited his choice of greatest hits to just the same few, and also that he did soooo many covers, while he had an amazing repetoire himself. Just look at his 1969 Opening season: many, many covers. Unbelievable.
