Elvis's Heart of Gold

Alan Fortas always said that Elvis had a heart of gold. The King proved it when Fortas' dying father was hospitalized and Elvis told Alan to go back o Memphis and tend to his father. "You stay in memphis," Elvis said, "and if it's two years, you pick up your paycheck every week and if you come back you're fired." "That Christmas, Elvis visited Fortas' father in the hospital and presented him with a gold pocket watch. It was a typical act of kindness, according to Fortas, and a side of Elvis that his friends saw regularly.

Yeah I heard about that story. I think the Gold pocket watch was inscribed with Elvis' name and was a dear enough personal possession. What a guy

Was Alan related in some way to Abe Fortas, the Supreme court Justice from Memphis? For a while it was reported that Abe was Alans father and I knew that was wrong but figured there muct have been some connection any one know what it is?

Alan Fortas was a Memphis high school football star (and nephew of Supreme Court Justice Abe Fortas) who received a full scholarship to Vanderbilt Universtiy. Fortas was a long-timer in the Memphis Mafia, on the team as a bodyguard and assistant from 1958 to about 1969. One of Elvis' closest comrades and confidants, Fortas arranged travel between concerts. He would occasionally join Elvis on stage, playing tambourine.
