    For The Record

    Hi Everybody,

    For The Record:

Elvis liked nothing more than a good practical joke. A death threat was once made on Elvis in Las Vegas (unfotunately, not uncommon), and as a joke, he called his backup gospel group, J.D.Sumner and the Stamps, and asked if they would accompany him to this hotel suite, acting as a human shield. Meanwhile, Elvis had Red West and other Mafia boys hide in the suite with blank guns. When Elvis and the unsuspecting Stamps hit the suite, Red and company burst out, guns "firing." Elvis screamed, clutched his chest, and crashed onto a coffee table. A horrified Sumner leapted onto Elvis, putting his body between the "killers" and Elvis. Elvis laughed hysterically. Sumner, a deeply religious man, erupted with a scream of profanities; Elvis couldn't have asked for a better response.

From the book by Frank Coffey.

Yes, I've read/heard about it also. But besides the laughter, this action from J.D. made a great impact and strenghten the respect that Elvis had for J.D.

Many people weren't aware of this, but J.D. was a real funny (dry humor) person also.

Have you heard about the time he and a bunch of his friends were coming into Memphis on the Lisa Marie. Elvis made his way up to the cockpit and entered. A few minutes later the pilot turned on the sign to let them know they were about to land and gave the usual instructions, then said "Elvis will be landing the plane folks" His friends looked at each other in horror and braced themselves. Just as the plane touched down Elvis walked from the cabin and burst out laughing. He had scared them to death but they all laughed at the joke he had played.

Theres also the great X-mas story where every one expected the big gift from Elvis, so he got a bunch of McDonalds 50cent gift coupons and put them in big envelopes. When he handed them out everyone went, wow Thanks Elvis and he watched with delight at their put on excitment. When he had opened what they had given him he started to retire then saud oh by the way I forgot these , new envelopes with big checks. Then everyone really laughed and got excited.

This has always given me a chuckle. It's not a practical joke, but just a funny comment from Elvis.

After having shot up one of his TVs in the mid-70s (from hearing one too many notes sung by Robert Goulet or seeing one too many hemorrhoid creme commercials, or the like), Elvis called his uncle Harold Lloyd up to his room to take the busted television set out to the trash.

First he threw a blanket over it, not wanting to have to explain to Lisa what he'd done.

Lloyd, a thrifty fellow who recently had TV troubles of his own but didn't know the reason for Elvis', came upstairs and offered, "Elvis, my TV set recently was acting up and it just needed (whatever)."

To that, Elvis flipped the blanket up, revealing the TV and asked, "Oh, really? Did yours have a hole in it?"

...you won't forget me when I go.

What I liked happened during the Dallas concert in June 1975. During the last part of "Love Me" Elvis sings "Whoo"..... then the background vocals set in their "Whoo" waiting for Elvis to fall in but he didn't.... I guess their faces turned blue in the process when finally Elvis finish off the song. He replied with: "What ya doin' J.D.?"
