THREE more live albums could've fitted in the 70s

Elvis could've had a live album EVERY year in the 70s leading up to his death in 77. there was enough scrap material from his Vegas concerts from 1969, 1970, and 1972 to make 3 live albums. there were 3 years to do this, 1971, 1975, and 1976.

Personally, I've always wondered why The Colonel never considered releasing a live album of either of Elvis' New Years Eve's performances in Pontiac, MI. 1975 or the now-infamous Pittsburgh 1976 show?

Considering how quick The Colonel always was to capitalize on a big event, I can't imagine he didn't even consider the possibility of releasing one of these two shows on a live album!!!

yes, thats a good question Mike. indeed, why? on such a global scale especially NYE 75, i have no idea. maybe due to the huge crowd, Elvis would not be heard clearly on the RCA recordings. theres no way it had anything to do with his appearance, look what happened with EIC

Maybe RCA just didn't record the show, although considering Elvis was performing before such a huge crowd, I would've thought that The Colonel would have jumped at the chance to record the show for a live album release...it is interesting though...

Perhaps you are right Scott and due to the acoustics in the Pontiac Silverdome, recording the show in such a way to get a listenable recording was impossible to do.

As much as I love live recordings, and can listen to endless playings of concerts that even have similar setlists, I don't think that Elvis' best interests would have been served in the '70s by releasing another live album. It might have been do-able as a double album or even a multi-disc set that compiled the cuts you list above, though...a compilation, really, the sort of thing that could even have been sold via TV or otherwise through the mail (tehy had some big success with that kind of thing, if you recall), rather than as a mainstream RCA release.

Just to clarify: I would have loved such a release (heck, we'd have welcomed it in the '80s!), but I do believe that the live albums released between 1969 and 1974 pretty much saturated the market for a while. Certainly, you'd want to have gone with some of the tracks you mention rather than releasing another concert or concerts with setlists similar to existing releases.
