Elvis On Tour: The Outtakes (yep, another one)

As every second inhabitant of this planet I could not resist the urge to create a cover for the Elvis On Tour Outtake-DVD that has started haunting the Elvis fan world.

My intention was to create a 70s feel and to make use of the colors of Elvis' suits he wore in the movie.

I think I have to put it aside for a few days before I can judge whether it is a good or a bad throw. In the meantime, I would be interested in hearing your opinion.

Great to see a new design from you, even though it is one that has been attempted in this board a couple of times before.

I absolutly adore the back and the effect you have for the different boxes. Great idea and you pulled it off great. I am not too keen on the front though. It has potential, and with some work could look great. Perhaps it would be more 60's than 70's though, concidering the colors and shapes (don't take my word for it though, as I never saw the light of any of those decades).

I would love to see the effects you've used on the boxes on teh back, in a finished design. May it be this one or a diferent one.

    LOOKIN' GOOD MANHATTOE!!!

Although I am certainly no alternate cover art designer, might I make a small suggestion? The front cover looks a bit too cluttered, in my opinion....perhaps a small change or two might correct that? I do LOVE the photo you used on the front cover and definitely think you should keep that for sure!!!

I LOVE the back cover design though....the way you have the different colors set up to go with the various tour cities is quite ingenius!!! I wouldn't change a thing with the back cover!!!

KEEP UP THE GREAT WORK MY FRIEND!!!

Thanks to all of you. Your comments are really appreaiated.

Mike, you are absolutely right as far as the front is concerned. This is the big problem zone on this cover. But this time I wanted to avoid a black background cover.

I thought about a multiple image front that would reflect the split screens in the movie, but that would be too much side at side with the back.

I like the effect on the boxes, too, but as a whole the back also needs refinement.

Well, I hope Muse will kiss me in the course of the next days ...

If not, I will have to console myself with another gal.

    Hi Christian,

I was immediately drawn to, and impressed by, what you have done on the back cover here.

I was also quite interested, for I have had a cover on the back burner a few weeks now using what appears to be a very similar technique to the one you have developed on the Elvis pictures on the back of your cover here.

Indeed you have taken the use of that technique even further than I have so far and it really is working well in giving the design that 70's vibe, and I also have a feeling there is room for you to develop it a little further before the project is finalised.

I think you are onto something with the front cover design too, it's not there yet for my taste, but I wouldn't change it alltogether. I would say I find the way you've laid out the title on the back to be far superior to the way you have it on the front at present.

To me, the side of the cover is the weakest part of the design by far, it looks somewhat hurried by comparrison, in my opinion.

Fascinating that yourself, Jeanno and Ron have all tackled this project, and all produced impressive, fresh and very different concepts.

Ron and Mark, thanks so much for your keen insights.

Ron, the sticker is a "Manhattoe" sticker (though the general idea has been used for years on many, many other covers), but I rather regard it as a placeholder that would need refinement eventually. If you like it, I will think about leaving it as it is.

Mark, you are totally right about the spine. I just did something to complete the design in order to be able to present it here in the discussion forum.

I also consider the backcover the visual backbone of it all. The front just doesn't come close and does not match that style, but I was hesitating to produce a full front with the same effect, but now I think I will.

    Thanks again, mates.

Like the others I love the back...but something isn't quite right about the front....the two just don't gel...it's as if they are from two different designs. I know I am not much help but I am sure you will bring it all together.

I've been looking into this actually, and there are actually 2 different versions of the ON TOUR OUTTAKES DVD's floating around on eBay and the internet.

One version is the 2-DVD set that Unchained recently acquired with all of the footage that has been mentioned including JOHNNY B. GOODE, ALWAYS ON MY MIND, etc.

The other version is a single disc DVD with just the material that bogarcon mentioned in his post.

Hope this helps you guys out!!

Here is the information I found on the internet regarding the 2-DVD version of ON TOUR OUTTAKES:

    Disc One

    1) Johnny B Goode - On Tour 'credits 'version, but you see the man himself singing it!! red shirt with white top. Lots of close up of Elvis & musicians. Elvis looks TTWII cool. His hair is brushed back from his face and he looks like 1970 Elvis. He's smiling and looking handsome.

    2) Always On My Mind - we've seen this in This Is Elvis, but this is a full version, less cropped, Red West is standing by him. Full version though. All shot from Elvis' left, very nice quality.Great low camera angle shots at the end. Elvis raises hand and sings that's enough.

    3) Proud Mary - A rare rehearsal, Elvis is wearing a blue jacket over the clothes you see him in in the Elvis On Tour FTD. Sound is muffled, but it's a full version. Elvis' hair is big. Shades on. . fantastic to see. Does an 'arm roll' at the end. Swigs coke.

    4) Big Hunk 'o Love - Wow! Still in dark blue jacket, sound is mo longer muffled and sounds fantastic, close up of Glen D rockin' a treat.

    5) Big Hunk Of Love - again, but different camera angles, in fact, it's a different version! cuts to Glen D joking, includes a false start. Looks like they are getting lots of shots of the band on this, but there's still plenty of Elvis, standing singing, not moving much,

    6) Burning Love - Wow again! "Lord have mercy, I feel my temperature risin'". The jacket is off, shades still on, Elvis is moving his head, looking like he's enjoying it. He's wearing the same as when you see him sing 'Lead Me Guide Me' etc in the movie, Stops the band before they go into the 'hunka hunka' bit, and directs them, then the song starts again, this is a seventies fan's holy grail. Elvis grooving now, moving hips. . . the shot on bottom left in the FTD on tour inner sleeve is taken DIRECTLY from this tape. This is the quality. Goes into 'huka bit', Leg pumping, puts shades on upside down. . song ends. "How are we gonna fade it on stage" he asks. It starts again, this time, with close up - Elvis angles. Red West, Joe E in background. Then he takes his glasses off and it's the second image (bottom right) in the FTD On Tour Rehearsals inner booklet thingie.

    7) I John - All around the piano, like Lead Me Guide Me in the Original Movie. James B sitting on/by the piano playing & smiling.

8] Interview - What's this?? Elvis talks about JD Sumner. . . close up, black & white. Must be from the same session. When have I heard this before? Lost On Tour boots? anyway. Here it is with Elvis talking about his roots, high school, Mario Lanza, talks about his love of Gospel, and discusses the intensity of his stage show with the producer/interviewer. This is fantastic to see. Elvis is
humbled by the compliments given, and it makes you like Elvis more. Then he says the "puts your mind at ease" dialogue we now. Then talks about his Vegas Shows, he's really cool and charming here. Talks about his band in a very complimentary way. "We got a big jump from here to Buffalo" Elvis says. "I enjoyed it fellahs" he says at the end. The interview segment lasts about 12 minutes.

    9) Burning Love - Instrumental. . . must be the band warming up, and the cameramen getting close up shots of instruments.

    10) Burning Love - Elvis is wearing the light blue jacket with criss-cross design, as in the 'I John' segment of EOT. The mike is on a stand, and reading the lyrics off a sheet. He's shaking the mike stand as if on stage, the vocal is distorted but it matters not - there's a BIG close up of his rings on the mike, yea, it's 1972 without doubt!!

    11) "How was your launch?" - the full 'buried in a beaver, with out the 'This Is Elvis' edits. Sings 'what a friend we have in Jesus". A lot longer than TIE

    12) Backstage, white suit. . Red laughing, there's Vernon, Elvis holds a glass up high, and says "as the cup turns", everyone's laughing, as he chucks the water over Lammar, (it's not quite as infantile as it sounds), then he towels him down. Quite funny actually. Elvis takes his ventolin.

    13) "I used to be pretty good at this in service . . " Elvis is backstage wearing the light blue shiny shirt, and putting on a MASSIVE tie, with badges on, (a gift from a fan?). Then he gets two gold records, for the MSG album, and Wonder Of You single. You may have seen pictures of this. I think this could be Vegas or Tahoe.

    14) Footage of Elvis wearing the white pyramid, and from a VERY short interview with some guy, I think this is Tahoe. Did they film in Tahoe?

    15) Leukaemia Kid - I think he's on the plane. . wearing the white Portal suit. She asks for a request "Don't Cry Daddy, Love Me Tender, or anything you want to sing". He says "I'll do one for you, and it'll be a surprise". Nice.

    16) Backstage again, white suit, talking about Burning Love, It's like 'Burning Love' the movie this thing!

    17) A quick shot of Elvis walking backstage in white suit.

18] Cattle Call, in rehearsal, we're back to the 'Lead Me Guide Me get up', with some shots of loads of stuffed hound dogs. Not a highlight. .

    Disc Two

    1) Teddy Bear, Hampton Roads Virginia (light blue suit). As in Lost performances. Diff camera angles. Cuts before Don't Be Cruel.

    2) Scraps of white suit footage, Trilogy, close ups of band. Cape shots, Elvis leaves stage.San Antonio.

    3) Al Dvorin on stage saying. . (guess!)

    4) Until It's Time For You To Go - Dark Blue Owl suit (as in EOT) Greensboro- Excellent! Elvis is wearing a cape, stops singing whilst there's feedback. Charlie takes his cape off.

    5) Love Me - Hampton Roads again. . "I'd like to do a few oldies but goodies" . . . Someone tosses a bra on stage, it he puts it on his head, lovely close-ups.

    6) For The Good Times - Hampton Raoads. Great footage, Elvis is so cool in '72. He's enjoying this song! The quality f this footage is excellent, better than the on stage TTWII stuff (that I haven't got or seen or know where to get). "hold your warm and sweaty body close to mine).

    7) Release Me - Owl Suit. Diffrent angles from the one we had in the Lost Performances. Nice.

8] Heartbreak Hotel - Greensboro (dark Blue Owl suit) Just the last line. Heh! goes into. .

    9) Big Hunk O Love - and look at him! air guitar, the sweets clapping, Glen gets a glass of water in the mush, then another camera anlge of the last verse of Heartbreak . . .then

    10) Big Hunk O Love - again, but from close angle. Close up shots of chest, rinestones, face, Nice footage.

    11) Opening Riff & CC Rider- and loads of diffrent camera angles Hampton Roads (light blue suit). Cape on, leg snappin' givin it that casuall, cool, 'check me out' Elvis vibe. Not to much Elvis footage here, screen goes blank...

    12) Opening Riff & CC Rider- and loads of MORE diffrent camera angles from Hampton Roads (light blue suit). Lots more Elvis. Tall & in charge. A prince from another planet!

    13) More CC from Hampton. Some great playing guitar shots. This is amongst my favourite Elvis footage. He's so cool here.

    14) Greensboro. . "we're gonna spring a new song on 'ya tonight, we don't know it too well, if we goof it up, just bear with us. . it may take a little while but we'll get it right" Burning Love, all filmed from close range. . and what a messy ending!!! Elvis says "I thought we'd never end !!! we've never done that on stage before so if we messed up I'm sorry. . anyhow".

That's what I found on the internet....can anyone who has seen the 2-DVD version confirm this? Unchained?

    TCB!

I've been over to your site to check out the back cover of your DVD, but for some reason, all that loads in when I look on your site is the front cover and the booklet....can't find the back cover.

Would it be too much to ask to have you briefly list the differences between your copy of the DVD and the one I just posted above?? I'm just curious to see what the differences are...

    THANKS UNCHAINED!!!

I copied the tracklisting for the 2-DVD set that I found on-line word for word, so apparently only the single DVD version of ON TOUR OUTTAKES has LOVE ME TENDER and HOW GREAT THOU ART!!

Thanks for the heads-up on that bogarcon!

As a matter of fact, I havn't watched the DVDs yet, since I don't have them (just to answer bogar?on's question).

I heard about different versions, and that's why I chose this design, because it will fit any On Tour DVD (yep, I knwo, it isn't finished yet). I will create tow or three inlays to match the different chapter listings, but this will takes ome time, before I can lay my hand on this design again (appr. 2 weeks).

I hope, I will have all the information about the different DVD versions available then.

Thanks so far to Mike and bogare?on and all the others who typed all that stuff for us.

    Thanks Tommy.

I am still unsure about the front. However, I won't keep this version, that's for sure, and the back also needs some refinement.

Unfortunately, there is little time now to finish the cover.
