Now that would be a good idea - Phil Ochs is right with his statement that a leading person like Elvis Presley would turn America's society into a place more human..

Old folks having a decent elderly existence. Children and youth no longer being depressive. Less suicides. Music with quality instead of today's supermarket bubble-gum empty minded pop music. Fruit which is tasteful to eat. The end of hunger and thirst.

An economy which does not depend on rich Arabs with oil, but on solar power and hydrogen. A land for Palistanians to live in. No more war in Mesopotamia. Women no longer being repressed. Homosexuals no longer being punished to death sentences. The end of racism.

Going outside and smell the fresh air, without getting sick and asthmatic because of cars and planes going by. Being able to swim in the ocean and in the rivers. and a way for people in great pain to live with more ease; it is also a strong and long-lasting fibre which is a lot better than cotton. It would be ideal for clothing, ropes, furniture, food (it's seed contains essential fatty acids)... Stem cell research and giving it an appropriate medical function as well.

Now that would be a world I would like to live in!

Elvis is many things to many people, when I am sad I listen to Elvis, when I am happy I listen to Elvis.

I devote many hours to my site but never lose sight of the things around me that are real and tangible. Elvis from what I have heard and read never commented on world events or politics and commented In the Madison Square Gardens press conference that "I'm just an entertainer".

What I am trying to say is.......................... we can affect our own destiny by our own actions as Elvis did himself.

To place so much faith in others and not yourself can be counter productive.

Elvis is a legend, the King of Rock 'n' Roll, an Icon but still human.

There are three things that I learn from Elvis, his kindnees and warm heart; his sensitiveness about expresing him self in his art and in his ability to enjoy what did touched his heart and not what was the music fashion; and the combination of those qualities in something that he indeed achieve: make people happy trough his art; and that is somethin much more genuine than some peace and love change the world bullshit by some neurotic full of regret autoritarian hippie. (Will not name any artist so I dont make any ______ fan mad)

Elvis done what he done for our society, I recognice and thank that, but each of us has the responsability for our world.

Enigmatic Sun, I like and agree with the world you paint, so I´ll just say, lot of work we have, thats not in the hands of leaders, is in your hands man. Ideals without smart actions are pestilent.

May I add, in a personal level, I learn more about Elvis big mistakes and failures in his character than from his iconic status, but that doesnt mean I dont love the man.

This is a wonderful thread with many beautiful responses. Elvis was so special in so many ways, aside from being a musical genius and the greatest entertainer the world has ever seen and also the biggest star the world has ever known, his other qualities were also tremendous. He for the most part always went against the grain and trusted his beliefs. In 1956/57 when America was at the height of racism, a 21 year old Elvis Presley frequently attended shows that featured African-American artists only, gladly taking pictures, never once fearing that he would be villified for doing so. In 1969/70 when the youth of America completely disrespected the police calling them "pigs", Elvis showed the utmost courtesy to these fine men and women, again against the grain. It took a major disaster like 9/11 before these people finally got recognized for their heroic efforts. He was such a talented, humble man with superhuman attributes who had normal problems like a lot of us do. Time after time we read about the people he touched with his generosity and how he treated everybody equally, that to me says what kind of a man he was.

First of all, I would like to say that I don't think that Elvis wasn't capable of being human - even he was just a man! On the other hand, it's true that a lof of people like to think of him as 'the King' or 'the supreme deity in 20th century music'.

Yes, I do think that Elvis was a very special figure with a lot of great characteristics; I do also think, though, that Elvis would have been the first of all to say that 'there's only one king and that is Jesus'. I hope I didn't offend anyone; I'm religious myself so the last thing on my mind is trying to offend others!

I'm glad that most folks seem to agree on the part about my vision on the world. It's really a subjective and personal point of view, so others may have their own & unique opinion - it was surprising enough that the only point mentioned here was the maryjane story; I was rather thinking about the subjects of homosexuality, Palestinia and the war in Iraq (as these subjects tend to be of great impact to some folks).
