    The Jacksonville Tremor

    Hi folks,

here is my design for a show I never listened to myself.

The reason for creating a cover for the Jacksonville show from April 16, 1972 was the abundance of good pix I found in my and other peoples' archives. To my knowledge, no other date is known at which El had worn this suite, so I fired them all here in a booklet.

I hope ypu like my design. I tried to do it straight and simple to give at that 70s RCA touch I like that much. Of course, I had to make some concessions to the modern gaze, but not too much.

I hope you like. Please let me know your opinion.

Please note that the zip-archive, which you can download via the fabulous ep-tunes site is quite large (3,2 MB).

I?m going to check the bigger version later on tonight and give you a better reaction. Also I do think this much cover should at least get two replies.

Thanks for your nice comments, Ron.

I fear, a close inspection by an expert like you will reveal some technical deficiencies here and there due to low resolution pix which had to be boosted (as all images used here). But I am glad I already received a general positive reaction. And I am hopeful, that you will like the booklet because of its consistent, though "fluent" layout.

And, yes, you are right, usually I invest the biggest amount of time into the making of the front cover.

This design looks fantastic imo I only wish the audience recording I have of this show was a good as the cover you've created!

I'll agree that there are lots of nice photos of this suit out there, and from what I can tell you picked some of the best ones I alo like the effects that you used on the front cover - it really fits that "tremor" name.

A very well coordinated effort....thanks for sharing it.

The only thing I don?t like is the Elvis font, I do not really consider the logo being good enough for this cover. Maybe a very normal font would have looked better. Taking nothing away from the rest of this cover off course.
Thanks for your comments, Ron. They are really appreciated and my make breats swell with pride.

I am glad you like it that much. As for me, however, I do not consider as a major creative accomplishment myself. It is impressive, certainly, because there is "so much cover" (as you aptly remarked above), but the design is a bit "hausbacken".

The same counts for the Elvis-logo, which, by the way, a slight graphic reminiscence to RCA's original Madison Square Garden cover and so I think it fits quite well into the design. But to each his own.

it's mighty fine looking cover! but man these covers ran your cartridges low off ink..lol
Maybe it's good idea whem we put up a thread and pinn it, how to print such covers.
And maybe we can add to the empty covers thread some original logo's for evrybody to use..

Man, that's a whole lotta cover, Christian.

Very nice and coherent layout..............I know you're a man that enjoys some in depth discussion on the technicalities of his designs, so I hope to return to this one at a later date when I can give you a bit more of a detailed reply.

Just watched your website Manhattoe, I think you've got some great covers there! You've got some (to me) original effects to the lines and pictures. Wish I could use that Country Sides cover for the Elvis - Country cd, pitty it's got the wrong tracklist.

Only one thing, try to focus on the of pictures with almost black backgrounds when you paste them onto a real black background, sometimes you can see the cutting edges. Maybe you can make the backgrounds of those pictures a bit darker or just brush over those lighter areas. Maybe it's just becouse I've got a tft-screen, I've noticed that such things are better to see with such a screen. Neverteless great covers! Also this Jacksonville Tremor

    Thanks Mark your kind remarks.

As for the technicalities, yes, I like to fathom such topics, but I hope it hasn't become a nuisance to anyone here.

I also fear, that, from a technical point of view, this design will reveal its deficiencies. I had many pix, but only a few which would allow a final resolution of 150 dpi at most. So I had to boost all pix and that shows.

But I am looking forward to perusing your extended comments, Mark, they are always an interesting read.

    Thanks for your comments, Geert.

But it's not my website, some unselfish guys just fill some otherwise wasted webspace.

The whole cover section will be completely revised within the next weeks, because some defect files and previews have been posted as final versions by mistake.

As for those color inconsistencies, please let me know, where you found them exactly. I know, a TFT display reveals the slightest aberrations without pity.

One source for that is that I used to send the files to ep-tunes in CMYK-mode with embedded color profiles for optimized output on PS-driven color printers.

It took me some time before I realized that they converted the files back into RGB-mode to save space on the server, and thus some colors changed and the profiles got lost.

But, as I said, as soon as there is time, the section will be revised, some new covers will be posted there, others will be removed.

I haven't downloaded all the covers and I don't know if these are your covers then but on the
    - Born To Give Us Fever cover: on the inside of the front behind the tracklist and on the back around the Elvispictures.
    - The Finale: on the front around the two photos on the bottum (nice idea but on the front cover I would place just one large (dramatic?) picture)
    - Jacksonville Tremor: second page of the booklet, on the left bottum of the yellow-tone picture the light effect on the stagefloor doesn't fade out enough, you can see the outerline of the picture. It won't be covered by the next page becouse this little mistike is not in the center of the booklet.
Most of the time I don't think that a normal printer can print these little differences but on the covers mentioned here those differences are quite heavy so when you would print them they problably do appear. Maybe even more visible. The designs are very cool I think! Sometimes they just need this finishing touch.

    Dank U wel, Geert.

I will check all that and correct those mistakes.

As I said before, that's a whole lotta cover .....to me sometimes it seems designing covers dominated with plain black backgrounds for live shows could almost be considered the easy option in that with so many concert photos having dark backgrounds already, it doesn't require a whole lot of effort to lay them over a black background and produce acceptable results fairly quickly. Then again, that being the case, one could argue that a black background is the most natural choice for live show covers.

However, it's the layout as a whole; and the way all the elements come together in balance that really makes the difference (and what takes the effort); and you've certainly created a well balanced, consistent design that flows seemlesly from front cover to back here.

The whole front cover impressively echoes the title of the disc, the pose, the effects and the font work all successfully convey the CD titles sentiments.

The photos of course are fantastic and although you mentioned that some of the scans were of a lower resolution than you would have liked to have worked with, it doesn't detract from the layout and would probably print out to cd jewel case size with satisfactory results, the imperfections obviously being highlighted when examined on the screen full size.

The weakest part of the layout in my opinion would have to be the 'Elvis logo font' you chose to use on the front cover, it seems to me almost lost on a front cover demanding a more dominant 'Elvis logo'. Interesting you mentioned the MSG Elvis font, because in my opinion that could have been one ideally suited to the rest of your layout.

Not much more to add to what's already been said at this point................

    Great work, Christian
