    'Charro' Competition

    Hi Guys,

Following on from my previous thread which I queried a better quality DVD release of Elvis' classic western 'Charro', here's something for your thoughts:

I have stated before that I very much prefer 'Charro' to a lot of the 'cotton candy' fluff films Elvis made during the mid-60's period, so my question to you all is - which film do you prefer out of the following competition?:

    1. Charro vs. Girl Happy

    2. Charro vs. Tickle Me

    3. Charro vs. Harum Scarum

    4. Charro vs. Paradise Hawaiian Style

    5. Charro vs. Spinout

    6. Charro vs. Easy Come, Easy Go

    7. Charro vs. Double Trouble

    8. Charro vs. Speedway

    9. Charro vs. Stay Away, Joe

    10. Charro vs. Live A Little, Love A Little

    I'll post my results soon.

    Happy Voting,

    NEA.

    My Results

    1. Charro vs. Girl Happy

I've only seen 'Girl Happy' a couple of times but as far as I can remember it's as though they tried to make 'Viva Las Vegas' once again only this time Shelley Fabares plays the Ann-Margret role. I'm not too keen on this soundtrack either so 'Charro' wins this match.

    2. Charro vs. Tickle Me

I've only seen 'Tickle Me' just the once and that was over 20 years ago. I kinda liked it and thought it was an improvement on the soundtrack side of things, due to the fact that they used previous Elvis classics from non-soundtrack studio sessions. Nevertheless, I'm sticking to my guns (pardon the pun!) with the more adult type of role, so 'Charro' wins again.

    3. Charro vs. Harum Scarum

Don't like the film - don't like the soundtrack, it's only saving graces are 'Kismet' and 'So Close, Yet So Far'. The quality of the DVD is excellent but just as soon as 'Charro' is released in the same kind of quality on DVD then it will no doubt win 'Harum Scarum' even more hands down.

    4. Charro vs. Paradise Hawaiian Style

I suppose I would choose 'Blue Hawaii' over 'Charro' but certainly not in this case - there are too many cute things happening which features Elvis singing to Children & Dogs...It's a nice travelogue, but I'm sticking with the wild, wild west for this one.

    5. Charro vs. Spinout

'Spinout' boasts one of my favourite 60's Elvis movie soundtracks apart from 'Beach Shack' but the script seems to let it down somewhat - 'Charro' for me!

    6. Charro vs. Easy Come, Easy Go

I prefer 'Easy Come, Easy Go' to 'Harum Scarum' and I very much like the soundtrack better even though Elvis chants 'Yoga Is As Yoga Does', but still not enough to drop the reigns (pardon the pun, once again!) on 'Charro'.

    7. Charro vs. Double Trouble

The supporting cast is not too bad in 'Double Trouble' but 'Old Macdonald' and Annette Day screaming all the time keeps this film down when pitted against the might of 'Charro'.

    8. Charro vs. Speedway

Well, what can we say?....there is only one winner for me in this match and that is....wait for it.....'Speedway'!!!...Surpised?...Well, I think Elvis has got a great supporting cast with the likes of Nancy Sinatra and it very much tries to be another 'Viva Las Vegas' but its Elvis' rapport with Bill Bixby that keeps me intrigued in this film...sorry 'Charro'!

    9. Charro vs. Stay Away Joe

This is Charro's closest scenic script rival here and the one main thing that separates the two is comedy, but I'm inclined to go for the serious adult role of 'Charro' because Elvis doesn't sing to a bull in that film!

    10. Charro vs. Live A Little, Love A Little

There is only one winner for sure in this match and it most definitely is - 'Live A Little'....this is due to the fact that this was Elvis' slight departure into a more adult role just like 'Charro' but it still maintained the comedy aspect with some nice surrealism and a good soundtrack featuring 'A Little Less Conversation'. This was a 'cool' role for Elvis to play especially when you see him riding around in that beach buggy with those sunglasses on. There is also a glorious fight scene with the Wests (Hurrayyyy!!!!). The gals are gorge in this one too and so is 'Albert'!

So, there we have my results guys - 'Charro' winning 8 out of 10 against a good handful of the more 'candy floss' musicals from the mid/late '60s. But what do you think?
