Have you made any changes in your User CP lately? If you go to that and then Edit Options, scroll down to the bottom where it says Miscellaneous Options --> Message Editor Interface. If by chance you recently mistakenly selected Basic Editor (a simple text box), that would have eliminated those smileys.
