I'm such a fan of Elvis' music in the 50's, that I really can't say if there's anything I don't like from that decade. Early Elvis ROCKS!!!!!!![]()
There's a thread right now discussing the quality of Elvis' 70's songs, but the 50's have been kind of ignored. In your opinion what are the highs and lows of what was recorded? Here's mine:
Some highs:
I'm Counting On You (First in a line of beautiful Don Robertson ballads)
First In Line
Party
Got A Lot of Livin' To Do (smokin')
Big Hunk O' Love
One Night
New Orleans and the entire King Creole Soundtrack
Some lows:
Paralyzed
Poor Boy
Hot Dog
Lonesome Cowboy
How Do You Think I Feel (this song annoys me for some reason)
"I can't see my reflection in the water. I can't speak the sounds that show no pain. I can't hear the echo of my footsteps. I can't remember the sound of my own name" - Tomorrow Is A Long Time

Great topic to consider. In my opinion, it's really hard to find anything "wrong" with Elvis' music from the '50s. So, if it's alright, I list my Top 10 favorites from the 1950's, but I am unable to list any "low" songs from the same period.
Top 10 '50s
1. Don't Be Cruel
2. One Night
3. Lawdy, Miss Clawdy
4. First in Line
5. Mystery Train
6. Paralyzed
7. Jailhouse Rock
8. Young and Beautiful
9. I'm Left, Your Right, She's Gone
10. Anyplace is Paradise
That's my list..., for today anyway!![]()
IM
for me high points are one sided love affair from the first album, reddy teddy is great although it sounds better live, all the gospel songs of the fifties, young and beautiful is a fantastic balad. i'm not a fan of true love and lonesome cowboy though. to end off another great one is doncha think it's time.![]()
Elvis is the '50s is my least favorite Elvis. Don't play '50s Elvis much. Just off the top of my head a few songs I like:
Jailhouse Rock; Don't; A Fool Such As I; Big Hunk 'O' Love; Any Way You Want Me; Peace In The Valley; Love Me; Don't Be Cruel; I Need Your Love Tonight; On Night(With You).
Some songs i dislike: The entire Loving You soundtrack. Except for the title song. Also, Poor Boy from Love Me Tender. Yuck!!

My very favorite song that he recorded in the 50's has to be Tutti Frutti. I just love they way he sounded on that one!
Before Elvis, there was nothing....
All of the above plus I beg of you and I got stung-these are fantastic!
I really liked Elvis's music in the 50's as well and can't think of any songs off hand that I really don't care for. I really love Rca's Sunrise album, and love the songs such as I'll never stand in your way,I'll never let you go, your'e a heartbreaker and many more. I'm pretty much a fan of all the Elvis eras.![]()

Thanks everybody for your responses!![]()
Some others I did not mention are "So Glad You're Mine", "One Sided Love Affair", "Ready Teddy", "Rip It Up" and the awesome "Money Honey". His voice was so exciting on all those tunes!
The Sun years I think are fascinating as a document of his early days and the birth of rock n' roll. I will confess I don't listen to them much though. My favorites are "That's All Right", "Good Rockin' Tonight" and my all-time favorite, the wicked sounding "Baby, Let's Play House" - rock n' roll never progressed beyond that point as far as I'm concerned!![]()
One I do not care for is "Blue Moon". That song is boring to me. Sorry.
"I can't see my reflection in the water. I can't speak the sounds that show no pain. I can't hear the echo of my footsteps. I can't remember the sound of my own name" - Tomorrow Is A Long Time
I like lots of songs from the fifties, but the first I thought of are the last ones from the decade. That last session in '58 yielded those great really fast-paced rockers like Big Hunk O' Love, I Need Your Love Tonight, and Ain't That Lovin' You Baby. They're certainly among my favorites.
...you won't forget me when I go.
I got to tell you, Nashville Cat, I LOVE 'Blue Moon'. It fascinates me for some reason... Another Sun song that I like is 'I'll Never Let You Go (Little Darlin').
I'll stand up for "Blue Moon" too, if for no other reason than that it could possibly be used as a weapon against invading Martians along with Slim Whitman's "Indian Love Call".
In all seriousness, I have yet to hear a 50's Elvis tune I didn't like. Some may be more rockin' than others but it would be impossible for me to call any of them a "low"! But then, I do have a very undiscerning taste in music in general.![]()

I love the 50s Elvis and that period doesn't get enough attention from fans. Among my faves are:
Baby let's play house
Lawdy Miss Clawdy
One sided love affair
That's all right
Hound dog
Gotta lotta livin to do
Young and beautiful
Jailhouse rock
Big hunk o' love
That's all right stands up against any vocal performance Elvis gave in the subsequent 23 yrs. It was amazing in 1954 and it remains so today.
The 50's my favo era, great songs and ofcourse it all started then! I find it a very exciting era, you can feel something is starting to happen, things are changing. I cant say that there are really lows.
without a song, a man ain't got a friend,
without a song, the road would never bend,
without a song, so I'll keep singing the song.
