Has anyone else recieved this book + 2cd set as yet ? I recieved mine this morning and have to say that the book didn't live up to my expectations. It's a nice 270 paged book. There are loads of good pictures also. But i would say that at least 7/8th's of these pages are from the 50's.
Not that there is anything wrong with that. I love the 50's as much as anyone. But for a book that contains 2cd's that are 70's live recordings, i have to say i really expected to see a whole chunk of 70's pictures.
The 70's pictures in the book are nice shots. Some i have never seen before. But there are so few of themFor a book that contains 2cds from the 70's...this just makes no sense to me.
As for the CD's. Well i am only a small way into the 1974 show. Trying to get to you is playing and so far, its pretty good. So maybe the cd's will make up for the lack of 70's pictures
I am not saying its not worth the money. As its a nice addition to any Elvis fans collection. Just thought the pictures would have matched the shows a little more.
Now we know why the front was a 50' picture...don't we

It looks fantastic, but the Cd's don't match the content (and artwork) of the book. Like Nightrider said: 7/8 of the content (text and pictures) are about the 50's (also the frontcover), while both CD's are shows from the 70s.

Just got home and received Rockin' Across Texas, Big Boss Man and Elvis Is Back...
I just went thru the book briefly and most of it is fifties stuff, but it sure looks like a very interesting read... The seventies pics sure look nice, though some of them seem a little out of focus. Anyway, gonna listen to the cd's this weekend.
While I'm typing this I'm listening to Big Boss Man (I Got A Woman playing) and it sounds just great to me!
The Elvis Is Back packaging looks **** good! The inside is kinda sober, with both of the cd's and the "A Date With Elvis" picture, but the booklet looks very good! It also has the small picture cover art that appeared on the original first pressing LP album inside. It also has some wonderful color shots from that period with Elvis' hear blonde instead of black.
And then that great song listing! It sure will be a delight to listen to that one!

There are two good shows Of the 70's and there are almost no pics. of this.
I was thinking the made the book around those two concerts but hell I was wrong
Anyway They are two nice shows and the big boss man show is very good.

A day later I would like to add that the book is really interesting!
It has a lot of unseen early fifties pics and more than a lot info and articles on our man and Scotty and Bill when they were starting out.
It's a diff'rent book then The Way It Was and Flashback. Those two had a lot of pictures but almost no text.
This new one has a lot of pictures and a lot of text, which definately is a plus!
And on top of that we get two cd's (two concerts).
I've listened to the Fort Worth concert today and the quality is absolutely great!
The concert itself is very good for a 1976 concert. Elvis sounds like he's really having a good time and he also tells his audience so!
It's not a complete concert though, because the drum solo is missing.
Conclusion: great book (many pics, mostly unknown and lots of text) and two great sounding cd's!

I like it... there's a lot of great unseen photos in there.
Also quite a bit of good reading too.
It would have been even better with maybe more pages.... another 100 or so, with more info and pics from Elvis's 70's concerts, but anyway......
The CD's are also great, I notice there's a lot of dialogue from the talking LP "Having Fun With Elvis On Stage"

The Fort Worth show is the same as the one featured in Cajun Tornado, is it not? If it is, listen for the F-bomb in Polk Salad Annie.
Also, if I'm not mistaken, Tony Brown cites that show as being the best one he saw while he was with the show.

So there where no " Shake your hands" on the Forth Worth Concert? That's a disappointment.
The Show on RAT is July 3rd, wheras the show CT is June 3rd. Tony Brown is quoted is Jerry Hopkins' "Final Years" book as saying "the best show I saw Elvis do was in Fort Worth in June." The one on CT wasn't that hot, how about the one on RAT?Originally Posted by Lonniebealestreet

The show on Rockin' Across Texas is from July 3rd, 1976 as you know. Both shows seem almost identical, though I rate the one that came with Rockin' Across Texas higher.
Besides Elvis in a good mood it also comes in very, very good quality!

The lack of 70's pics is a shame .... and the 74 show is not the best concert that he did in that year and the sound is a little dissappointing
But without a doubt the 76 show is a gemsome great real Elvis from the past
performances ... and possibly the best sound from any 76 release so far.

I had a sneaking suspicion that this book would be quite heavy on the 50's photos, despite the inclusion of 2 soundboards from the 1970's! However it's probably a safe bet to assume that if RCA had 2 soundboard recordings from 1950's Elvis concerts, that those would have been included instead of the 70's shows!
Sadly, I haven't picked up a copy of this one yet! I did receive ELVIS IS BACK and BIG BOSS MAN, but I am just having a really hard time keeping up with all of the new FTD releases that seem to hit the marketplace all at one time! Believe me, I am VERY GLAD that FTD continues to thrive and release such great material for us fans!! But if they are going to release so much material, wouldn't it make more sense to spread the releases out and perhaps release 1 title a month, instead of 3 titles all at one time? Many more fans would be able to afford these releases I think, if FTD would spread the releases out more throughout the year instead of releasing several titles at one time! Just my opinion though...
Anyway, thanks everyone for your early reviews on RAT!!! Now that I know my suspicions about the 50's photos are correct, I won't feel so bad if I don't get this one right away (although I do hate to miss out on the '76 show....sounds like a great one from what everyone here is saying so far!)!!

your right tcbmatt. i also think ftd should slowdown on the amount of releases at one time. i myself have the book rockin' across texas and am really happy with it, especially the 76 show. the thing that dissapoints me about the 74 show is that it ends before can't help falling in love is finished. you'd think they had a complete soundboard for this release. it is a good show though

I don't have this release, so I can't give you a definitive answer. However, I would be very surprised to find out that the sound on this release is better than the recording of the March 21, 1976 performance from Cincinnati featured on the import Holding Back The Years.
It's a very enjoyable show. It features the most standout performance of America The Beautiful I've ever heard, and Larrie Londin's drumming really shines on this great recording. You can tell it's a different drummer just a short way into 2001.
It's been some time since I've played it, but I also recall both complete run-throughs of Hurt being excellent, as was And I Love You So, despite a false start.
He forgot the lyrics and mumbled his way through nearly a whole verse of Burning Love (what was it about that song?), and humorously called out "Hurt!" just after that, because he had just done so well with that song and was obviously more in command of its lyrics. He also laughed through most of 'Mountain', after singing, "blamed for the loss of his eye." Reportedly all the visually impaired audience members stormed out after that. Only kidding.
Despite a few marks against it performance-wise, it is overall a very good show and without question, a great sounding CD. It has a very full sound with a nice amount of reverb added, and you can hear the audience quite well.
One notable piece of dialogue from the show--well, it's trivial, but it's stuck in my mind for whatever reason--goes like this:
"...I have to make an important announcement. Somebody just handed me a phone--[corrects himself] a note. It says, 'Carla Irwa M-U-L-F-O-R-D, please come to the first aid room in section 116.' So, I was supposed to make that announcement. You got it? OK..."
I wonder if that person is alive today, and if she has any idea that there is a recording of that.
Well, I didn't mean to write a review of that CD...Anyway, those of you who have it as well as RAT, how do they compare?

Oh, to get really tangential here...I believe there have now been two performances released from the Holding Back The Years Cincinnati show in stereo sound. I don't recall the first one, but Steamroller was just released on The Legendary Performer, Vol. 5 (Madison). Anyone know the story on this? Is an explanation given in the liner notes?
I'd like to hear more about this Fort Worth show from the RAT release, if anyone has anything to add.

You are right, two full stereo songs from the Cincinnati (March 21, 1976 evening show) have been released.
Unfortunately (for as fas as I know) Steamroller isn't one of them.
Let Me Be There - released as a bonus track on: Movin' Mobile.
And I Love You So - released on: A Legendary Performer Vol.5
These two sound nice, but the overall sound on Holding Back The Years is far superior!

Elvis' first road tour of 1976 featured a new piano player and a new drummer, Shane Keister and Larrie Londin.
And I Love You So from Cincinnati, Ohio, taken from a unique binaural recording of the whole gig, proved that the change did not affect the quality of the Elvis Presley show.

Thanks for the info, Sonny. Don't know where I got Steamroller. Interesting to learn that the whole show exists in that form, but surprising that the sound is inferior to HBTY. Although, on some of those high-quality soundboards, you hardly miss their not being in stereo.

I just recently finished reading my latest issue of Bill Burk's ELVIS WORLD magazine, and he had an article in the issue regarding this very announcement!
According to Bill, her name is actually CAROL Mulford. Apparently, either the name was written wrong on the slip of paper handed to Elvis, or he simply read the name wrong. According to Bill's article, Carol was at the concert with her husband and 10 of their friends. Their young daughter had a seizure and was taken to the local children's hospital and the police were paging Carol to take her and her husband to the hospital.
The idea for this whole article apparently got started earlier this year when Peter Z., the local program director at Cincinatti radio station WGRR contacted ELVIS ONLY host Jay Gordon about obtaining something special to air on WGRR in commemoration of Elvis' birthday. Jay sent Peter clips from the HOLDING BACK THE YEARS CD, including the announcement for Carol.
Just like you Bobby, Peter Z. was interested to know if Carol was still alive and if she could clarify the story. According to Bill's article, the Cincinatti Enquirer printed the search for Carol on a Friday, and by the following Monday morning, Carol's niece called the station to clarify the story. WGRR also got a phone call from the retired police officer who escorted Carol and her husband to the hospital! The police officer made it a point to tell Peter that The Colonel actually REFUSED to allow Elvis to make the announcement, but some of the guys from the Memphis Mafia saw the officer arguing with The Colonel and they stepped in to get the announcement to Elvis. The officer stated that he was even allowed to come up to Elvis' suite between shows and visit with Elvis and the guys! And apparently, both the officer and the Mulford's state that Elvis checked to see how their daughter was doing later on after the shows!
Wrapping the article up, Bill reports that since that concert, Mrs. Mulford's daughter has passed away. Her husband also recently passed away as well, but according to Mrs. Mulford, they played nothing but Elvis' gospel music at his funeral!
There wasn't any mention in the article if Carol knows there is a recording of that show, with the announcement. I would imagine she must though, given the radio station was trying to track her down, based on the recording of the announcement!
