I once heard a rumour about a 1970 or 1971 version but I do not know if there is a recording of it. James Taylor had a hit with this song in 1970 and it is likely Elvis knew about it immediatly and got hooked.
I don't know anything about music.
Well put it this way. If you were doing a performance in front of a quarter of the worlds population, knowing you were being watched at home, you'd wanna get things right too.

Unless I'm very much mistaken, Elvis introduced this song to his act in 1972. By 1973 the version had changed just a bit, but it was great anyway I tried to listen to it. It's too bad I'm not able to find a version from '72 for you fellaz. The last time Elvis did this song was in 1977 and I think the song hadn't lost any strength.
For some reason, I try to do this song with my own style, and it suits me well. Really the kind of song to get red in the face with and nearly explode. Really seeing the muscles of the neck working while doing it. Very nice to accompany on the guitar!
all the goons I left behind,
memories still linger..
'Steamroller' is a **************** hard song to sing, and sing well! It just about kills everytime i try it, Elvis's version from Aloha, although not as strong as later versions, is the definitive!![]()
