Honkey Tonk Angel is actually about a prostitute,lady of the night, call them what you will. The reason for the Honky Tonk in the title is a lot of these ladies plied their trade in saloons where the Honky Tonk piano was played.
Whether Elvis was aware of this I'm not sure. I am inclined to think that he did as it is an American euphemism.
I do know that Cliff Richard recorded his version of this many years ago, and when told what a Honky Tonk Angel was he quickly had the song withdrawn from air play. Probably just as well because, in my opinion, Elvis version was far superior.
