Photos of Private Presley Added to Mobile Apps
September 15, 2012
Without any of the special privileges, his celebrity status might have afforded him, Elvis honorably served his country in the U.S. Army. In September of 1958, after completing basic training, Elvis was assigned to the 3rd Armored Division in Germany and boarded a train to New York to ship out on the USS Randall. He was stationed in Friedberg for 18 months, maintaining an off-base residence in Bad Nauheim, he shared with his father, grandmother and his entourage from Memphis. Freelance photographer Alfred Wertheimer captured photos of the young Private Presley before he shipped out to Germany. Wertheimer was captivated by the young, energetic artist, and for just a handful of days in the spring and summer of 1956, he followed Elvis Presley and took pictures of him during his leap from obscurity to super stardom. It is only fitting for him to have captured Elvis at the beginning of his service in the Army. Presley returned to the United States in March of 1960, and was honorably discharged with the rank of sergeant. Fans can see this collection of photos at the "Elvis at 21: Photographs by Alfred Wertheimer" exhibit at the Pink Palace Museum in Memphis or purchase their own "Elvis at 21" apparel at Elvisat21.net. In honor of these one-of-a-kind photos and Elvis' service in the United States Army, we've added photos of Private Presley to the Elvis Mobile 2.0 iPhone app, Elvis Mobile 2.0 Android app, and Elvis for iPad app.

Elvis at 21: Photographs by Alfred Wertheimer
July 21, 2012 - October 14, 2012
The King will reign at the Pink Palace this Summer! The year was 1956, and freelance photographer Alfred Wertheimer had been asked to photograph a relatively unknown Memphis singer. He was captivated by this young, energetic artist, and for just a handful of days in the spring and summer he followed Elvis Presley and took pictures of him during his leap from obscurity to super stardom. Now you’ll have the chance to see these one-of-a-kind photographs for yourself this summer at the Pink Palace.
It’s only fitting that these larger-than-life photographs come to Memphis right before and during Elvis Week. Come relive the King’s innocent younger days and feel the energy of a young man who was only just beginning to realize his potential. Alfred Wertheimer’s gorgeous photo exhibit has been displayed in prestigious museums and galleries across the country, including the National Portrait Gallery in D.C. and the Grammy Museum in Los Angeles. The exhibit is finally coming back to its rightful home here in Memphis: the birthplace of Elvis’s career.
Elvis at 21: Photographs by Alfred Wertheimer will open to the public July 21 and will be on display through October 14, so come to the Pink Palace this summer and kick off Elvis Week early by celebrating the birth of a legend.
