I find it strange that Ernst didn't want anyone to film or even take a snap shot of the screen while they played it. It makes them look like they are not confident enough that it would sell if the general public knew what it looked like.![]()

I think you are reading to much into it. They just don't want people to be able to "bootleg a bootleg" were his words. You will love the video, I promise. They did a great job. Yes it's not a professional version but they mixed the audio with it beautifully. The video quaility was great as well.

But will Joe Public like it? That's the most import thing. This is a MAINSTREAM release meaning it's aimed at the general public. Not the die hard "gotta have everything Elvis" fans. If it were just for those fans then it would have been an FTD release instead. This could really blow up in their face if it's not accepted by the general public that purchases it.

Do not forget - the DVD and the MSG video is bonus.... Its not the core of the release.
No, you cannot see that on Youtube. I would say the guy was sitting no further than 8 rows back and he had some close ups and zoomed back far enough to see all of Elvis. The guy was almost dead center to the stage. Now they only played part of the songs for the example. Now I will say that Ernst said the guy had to change tapes about every 3 to 4 mins, so its 23 mins long but some of the video will be lost because the guy had to change tapes. So I would guess you really only get to see Elvis 15 to 18 mins. They said they just left everything as is on the DVD, meaning you see the black screen as the guy is changing the tape. Hope that helps get an idea of what you will see.

Also, they included a 20 minute documentary on the event, yet wasted space by using black space while the same audio from disc 2 plays on the DVD. That makes no sense. What they should have done is take the 23 minutes of footage and inserted it into the documentary. That way they kill two birds with one stone. They present a solid in dept look into that magical and historical engagement. But in the Elvis world of releases, things are done half assed.![]()

Well... I don't see the point in releasing 15 odd minutes of footage filled with black holes... why didn't they fill those holes with photos? Or from the footage we all know from Youtube?
Poke a little sock salad...
Well I will have to wait to get mine to tell how they could have done it better or not.
I will agree that since the early 70's camden genius releases, RCA made evident how incompetent where to market Elvis, and that some of that aura still prevails in Elvis world, still so much cheap and tacky product out there. But I would have to say that thanks to Ernst much of that have also changed in the 90's, lots of great releases leading to FTD records (not a perfect label but still so fun to have). And now he have done a great job lately in the mainstream label with the Complete Masters Box, the Legacy reissues, the Young Man With the Beat Beat box and now this seems to be thumbs up despite any critisism. For a while seemed that Elvis only lived in the FTD label, but now its like the 90's again!

I'm not exactly sure how they put it into the whole package. Ernst just said, they left the whole tape just like it was filmed. They didn't want anyone to say that they left pieces of the video out. So how it is incorporated into the whole Prince from Another Planet I do not know. From the 8 minutes that they showed I was impressed but they didn’t show the parts where the screen was black.

I think one way to have kept the blank sections to a minimul would have been to buy other existing footage of the show (its out there) and edit it together to reduce the blank spaces.
One thing I have always hated about bootleg footage is the skipping from one song to the next and songs not being complete-perhaps Sony feels that keeping the audio running for the songs even though the picture has stopped is better than just total skipping around from song piece to song piece.
In Sonys defense-unless this was destined to be a huge "public seller" they can not take we fans wish list of options and spend the capital to make those wishes come true. If they do not market it fairly large-get some BUZZ going for the public it just will not sell well with non fans.
if it sells better than expected with non fans-perhaps they will spend more on the next really big project-and listen to the suggestions (anf criticisms) we have.
My only problem is I like a taste of the quality before I buy-and it looks like we are not going to get a peak unless we were lucky enough to be there 8-17-12.
Work in Progress!
I couldn't give two sh**s what Joe Public likes.
Viva, I find it very funny how you tried to dress me down when on your other thread about this release I said I would wait to see what it is like before I bought it. Now, even you seem to be disappointed with this release.
And you called me negative all the time. Good grief, I don't hold a candle to you.
Maybe, just maybe my original advise to wait and see is becoming a reality for you. Good luck.
I guess, once the DVD is out, someone will rip it in to a movie editor and fill those 'black holes' with photo's, then it will probably turn on file sharing sites to download. Illegal of course, but I bet someone will do it.
