    Sony did it again-THEY LIED!

The DVD does NOT feature a full hour of the show filmed, instead it features just 22-23 minutes and the rest is blank fill in space. Talk about amateurs . That is so cheap to put out on the main stream. Sony said in their original press release that the media covered that the entire show was virtually filmed. But in reality, the show was much longer than 22 minutes. So actually the guy filmed approximately 1/3 of the show. Sony knew what they were doing. By getting people's hope up they lied and said the opposite of what was being released so that people would pre-order it expecting a whole show filmed. That my friends is called false advertisement. But they knew that Elvis fans would bite and buy their fibs.

This is the second time that we fans have been lied to in order to get us excited about a release to buy. The last was the 48 Hours To Memphis FTD release. We were told by Sony and FTD that it was professionally recorded in multi-channel but was released in 2-track stereo. But sounded more like an upgraded soundboard.

Like everyone else, I'll buy the set just to have the new mixes of these historical shows. But now I'm not getting as excited due to the lies we've been told. I'm taking the new set and mixes with a grain of salt.

Here's the link to the press release. http://www.latimes.com/entertainment...0,272323.story

An hour’s worth of film shot by a fan during Elvis Presley’s 1972 performance at Madison Square Garden in New York City will be included in a new 40th anniversary deluxe reissue of the live recording from that show. The package also includes two of Presley’s complete performances among four he gave over the course of three days in June 1972.

The film will get its world premiere Aug. 17 in Memphis, Tenn., a free event that’s part of Elvis Week activities commemorating the 35th anniversary of the singer’s death in 1977. The box set, titled "Prince From Another Planet” from the headline on a New York Times review of the engagement, is slated for an Oct. 30 release. It was originally released as a single LP titled “Elvis as Recorded at Madison Square Garden,” and it reached No. 11 on the Billboard album chart.

Using a hand-held camera, a fan filmed virtually the entire Saturday afternoon performance. The fan has requested anonymity and few other details about how his footage surfaced are available, according to a spokesman for Sony Legacy, which is releasing the package. “Rarely is unseen footage of Elvis in concert discovered, so this footage lends historical importance to the package,” said a statement issued Tuesday by the label.

After making his national breakthrough from 1956 and 1957 appearances on New York-based television shows including Jackie Gleason’s “Stage Show,” Ed Sullivan’s “Toast of the Town” and “The Steve Allen Show,” Presley didn’t perform in New York again for 15 years until the Madison Square Garden shows.

The “Prince From Another Planet” CDs include Presley’s Saturday afternoon performance of 20 songs, and the evening show at which he sang 23 songs. The set lists were similar at both shows. His TCB Band included such respected musicians as guitarist James Burton, pianist Glen D. Hardin and bassist Jerry Scheff.

Presley also gave a 20-minute press conference on the day his Madison Square Garden stint began, accompanied by his father, Vernon, and his manager, Col. Tom Parker. That press conference also is part of the DVD portion of the three-disc set.

The Sony Legacy statement includes one exchange between a reporter and Presley: “Which kind of song do you like doing the best?” he was asked. Presley responded: “I like to mix 'em up. In other words, I like to do a song like ‘Bridge Over Troubled Water’ or ‘American Trilogy’ or something. Then mix it up and do some rock 'n’ roll, some of the hard rock stuff. I'm not the least bit ashamed of ‘Hound Dog’ or ‘Heartbreak Hotel’…”

The two-CD, one-DVD box also includes extensive notes written by Patti Smith’s longtime guitarist Lenny Kaye, who covered Presley’s ’72 performance for Cavalier magazine.

Just read through the article above... this is the second time I've noticed Ronnie Tutt's name not mentioned in a main stream news article. The other reviewing a recent album recorded by Jim Lauderdale with the TCB Band that included Tutt, Burton and Hardin and it went on and on in detail about both Burton and Hardin but no mention of Tutt when I know for a fact he was on the album. What gives???

I never read anywhere that Sony claimed they had one hour's footage, that was speculation. I've ordered the set as I'm excited that the afternoon and evening shows are being remastered and remixed. The DVD footage was a BONUS and that's good enough for me.

"1. Afternoon show filmed June 10, 1972 (approx. 1 hour)"

Its confusing.... Right now it seems that we will get the full audio recording synched with existing video, which covers probably the full show, but with huge gaps.... I mean that the whole show is partly filmed (first video coming with 2001 Theme and That´s All Right, the last video covers Cant Help Falling In Love), but these are two very different meanings of the words "filmed virtually entire performance".... Still - this box is must have!

Well I didn't wanted to mention this, but it is most likely that only the "An Afternoon in The Garden" is going to be remixed, and the original album is going to be the same old mix but with the Complete Masters upgraded mastering.

Remember the recent "Operation Big Apple" Import/Bootleg double CD? It had the original raw "An Afternoon In the Garden" multitrack recording, no mix, no echo, just as it was recorded (James Burton Guitar in one channel, John's guitar in the other, they put in one channel both guitars in the "An Afternoon" Cd mix), but the second show, the original "As recorded At Madison Square Garden" album, was released in the well know mix, as it was claimed original tapes were lost. Most likely they used the Complete Masters master as their source.

Now, It might be that RCA/Sony did found the original tapes and did remixed the second show, I HOPE SO!!! but it is quite posible, and due that imports do work as a clue to what is next on Sony/FTD, that only the Afternoon show is the one remixed. Still great anyway, but as you say, no reason to lie about it, I hope they are not.

No, the evening show was REMIXED according to Ernst last night. They asked Michael Braurer the mixer to place himself in the middle of MSG and get the feel of what it would have sounded like for the remix. So explained how rushed the original album was and sounded more like it was recorded in a studio instead of 20,000 screaming fans. I have made this same claim and complaint on this forum in the past.

Here's a video of Ernst and the group explaining how they came about the remix for the evening show.

Re: Sony did it again-THEY LIED!

I had read elsewhere that the amount of film to be released was around 40 minutes-but how clear and how synced is the film that is being included?
I would love an entire show, I would love 40 minutes-but even 23 minutes of clear well synced footage is something new-if it is not-I probably will not be buying the set.

People who were there say that the footage was breathtaking. Ernst said that the video is in sections. The guy who filmed it had a camera with cartridges and every 3 minutes he had to change them out. So when we see the dvd the audio will be in full length but the video is in pieces. So in other words, when Proud Mary is playing you will see it live but then see it as a big blank screen while the audio continues until the footages pics up again.

A far, far cry from "virtually the entire concert was filmed". Sony needs to fire their spokesperson.

Thanks for the video. I was starting to doubt.

Great release anyhow. But yes I agree with you, they should be more clear and straight, but hey, that is not what marketing is about these days.

Touché! What I meant was prior to this piece I hadn't seen anything to confirm or deny the footage length of the DVD. Most pieces I've read were of people speculating. I haven't seen the original Sony statement and not for want of trying. Also, I don't read absolutely everything relating to Elvis or even threads I've commented on, it stands to reason I've obviously missed something.

Actually on an Australian site I saw the time listed as 40 minutes-with no real source.
I also have only seen the presses take on the announcement for the set-with some parts attributed to Sony.
Still rather than leave blank screen in places-they could have edited sections with montage photos, various fan reactions, etc......to fill gaps....I am anxious get a clue as to how this looks-before spending my hard earned dollars.

So where were people getting the run time from? I've already ordered it regardless of the footage, that's a bonus. Obviously it would be the stuff of dreams if there was almost an entire concert included, but really, was that ever going to occur?

Did Sony categorically say they were including an hours worth of concert footage?

Re: Sony did it again-THEY LIED!

I was there this week and the 8 minutes of the video they showed was amazing. I will be buying this package for sure. I don't care that it is 23 minutes, it was great. Did I mention it was great?
