Elvis survives and lives on-the test of time

On this 35th anniversary year since Elvis died I wanted to point out how ironic it is that:
there are still millions of fans,
more fan clubs than any other artist,
more impersonators than any other artist,
more total record sales than any other artist,
still one of the most recognized faces on the planet,
    still selling music and videos,
still known the world over by his first name.....etc....
    Why is this ironic?
Because from day one-he was considered "a flash in the pan"
The great one Jackie Gleason said "I tell you frankly he can not last"
Sullivan said he would never appear on his show
Steve Allen put him on and made fun of him thinking he was untalented (Allen hated rock)
Preachers and churches called him Devil incarnate-or Satans tool..... and attacked him from the pulpit.
Irving Berlin did not want him to record "White Christmas" because he didn't want it sang in a rock style.
Some white Americans panned him "for singing race music"
He was drafted and the people who hated him hoped that was his end.
He survived the 2 years away from music and came back on top.
He survived the movies that progressively got lower in quality and musical standards.
He survived 9 years without performing live.
He survived the Beatles and the British invasion.
He survived the sometimes horrific career direction of Col. Parker.
Lastly his spirit of charima and the talent that made him the one and only ELVIS has survived his physical death.
I hope we all remember the many obstacles that he surmounted over his life and career.....today to some they may seem trivial-but in his life and time they were hard to overcome.
    ELVIS LIVES!!!
    Work in Progress!

I may not always like what you have to say or agree with you, but this is spot on! The only bad thing about Elvis's remarkable record-setting career and success is how it all ended. Had he never died the way he did I think he would be even bigger and more celebrated and appreciated than he is now.

    Truly long live THE King!

Absolutly right!! Elvis did in 42 short years what some performers can't do in twice that much time! His Charisma, voice, talent and heart are unmatched, thru the good, the bad, the ups and downs, 35 years later he was, is and always will be Number 1!! Long Live the King!!

Agree on that Viva, and yet we might add to KMP list: Elvis survived Elvis.

I wish you knew Elvis at the time, Ken, so you could have said this to him.

Well said and so very true.

Re: Elvis survives and lives on-the test of time

I will add one thing that was important to the survival and longevity to Elvis A. Presley....he loved his fans, he was as loyal to his fans as they were to him. He did not judge them nor belittle them-he may have been amazed, astounded and taken aback by their actions at times- but he loved them and knew they were not just cattle or pawns. Not many stars are like that today.

So true, show me a star today that truly appreciates the fans as much as Elvis. A one of a kind, irreplacable man.

That is just one little aspect of his sensitive, kind personality that sets him apart from every other performer. The big thing was his unique vocal talent ((most today can't even sing) and his dynamic stage personality.

Well said Ken, .. remember when the bodyguard book about to come out and how feared Elvis of his fans thought of him ? he was afraid fans would turn their back on him, now 35 years has passed, I think Elvis himself would be proud and humbled of how he still love and missed and listen to,.. He has his own originality and charisma like no other, i think that makes him survive of all the odd that came into him during his lifetime.

Elvis was a 'one of a kind'.....they use the word 'Icon' so freely.....but he was, and always will be THE Man.......

thank you Elvis......we love you Man
