Why does Lisa Marie think Gladys died at 42?

I read in an interview with Lisa that she thinks Gladys died at 42. She said:"Yes, it freaked me out when I hit 42. It was my grandmother as well [who died at] the same age...". Why does she think Gladys died at 42? She was 46 when she died. And Elvis thought she died at 42, too. I read it in the book "Elvis and the Memphis Mafia". Why do both think Gladys died at 42? Did Elvis think his mother is as old as his father? Vernon was 42 when Gladys died.

Good question-math is math and Gladys died at 46.
A couple of songs have stated Elvis and Gladys both dying at 42 and many newscasters over the years have mistated the myth that they both died at 42 so perhaps she has just always accepted it.
My dad commited suicide when I was 5-and I am sorry to say I am not really sure of the age he was when he died-I think 29.
My grandparents I know were in their 70s-but exact age I would have to look it up. Funny how some things are so easy to recall and others slip from the mind.

That's interesting. Maybe she and Elvis knew something that wasn't supposed to be known by the public? As in his mother's age being wrong, maybe younger than she was led to believe. A lot of odd things went on back in those days in the south. Faked birth certificates among other things. Maybe she wasn't old enough to marry at the time and forged a fake certificate? It is interesting that Lisa, nor Elvis would know how old she really was at the time of her death.

I have heard that to that she died at 42. I think one of the things that could get people is that she died on August 14 and Elvis on the 16th. Now that is kind of weird. Sometimes I wonder if Elvis was more depressed around that time of August and maybe dipped into the pills more.

I believe that was it. As you say she being older than he means nothing today, but it could have been a bit of an issue back in the 30's so maybe they told everybody incluiding Elvis they where both the same age.

On the other hand it might be true that certain genetical tendency to gaing weight and to develop certain health issues after 40 might be common to the three of them. Fortunately modern medicine and Lisa's awarenes of it had and will keep her well and healthy unlike father and grandmother.

If I recall it right Billy Smith said in the book "Elvis in the Memphis Mafia" that Elvis said she died at 42. But why did Billy Smith know she was 46 and not Elvis? How can it be that his cousin knows more about his mother than he does? I´m not sure if it was Billy Smith who said it. I´ll try to find it in the book. But I think it was Billy.

Elvis had to know the correct age of Gladys because her tombstone gives her year of birth as 1912 and she died in 1958-46 years difference.

If Elvis mistated her age at death at times- it might be because Gladys always claimed to be younger and he recalled what she claimed the truth.
The date on the tombstone was probably a blur to him in his memory-the fact that his mother was dead was the prime memory.

Its amazing the things that are incorrect in books, interviews with insiders, or people who knew Elvis....that even when pointed out-take on a life of their own which seems to still trump the truth in somes minds.
In the John Wayne movie "The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance" an editor of a local newspaper upon learning the truth of who killed Libery Valance
says something along the lines of "when the legend becomes truth...print the legend"
