I'm sure there have been moments when a certain lyric sent a shiver down your spine because it seemed to foretell something tragic about Elvis' life. Obvious examples are My Way and and "Hush little baby don't you cry, you know your daddy's bound to die" from Trilogy. I want to know which ones had a special resonance for you and why. To start the ball rolling the line "I've got a heart that's haunted" from" You'll think of me" encapsulates the intense loneliness at his core. There were many women whose "cold and empty beds" he left but his quest for love seemed unfulfilled. My second choice is from "Good Time Charlie's Got The Blues", "you know my heart keeps telling me you're not a kid at 33, play around you lose your wife, play too long you'll lose your life" A reflective Elvis seems to be looking back at a life that had started to unravel and spiral out of control. The 33 year old Adonis of the 68 Special was on the crest of a wave, a recent father but the haunted heart set him on an endless trail that would cost him his wife. More worryingly the ominous lyric speaks of the tragic end that was imminent. I can't help but feel that Elvis at some level knew where this path would take him and without the redemptive power of love he seemed incapable of avoiding a tragic ending that on a par with any Shakespearean tragic hero.

Yes I guess we call can look into some of his songs and pick out moments that might mean something. I guess My Way might be one of the bigger connections to songs that he might be telling about what is going on inside the man.

The song Good Time Charlie, the line is: play around you'll lose your wife (not life) and play to long you'll lose your life. I forget what concert it was but Elvis sings the song and says play around you'll lose your wife (he say's, I did that) play to long you'll lose your life (almost did that).
