Would be great if it gets released Incomplete or not, its would be interesting to hear how elvis performs on his first show after 8 years. and if he sounded nervous. and its interesting to hear how the crowd goes wild one can hope
i think they didnt release it because the tracklisting it to short. then again they could have placed it into a 2cd set containing this to start of the cd.

There are also rumors of tapes with informal recordings of Elvis rehearsals for his '69 season in Vegas, but not in RCA vaults but in private hands.

Would be great to hear the tape you are sharing!

If this was in their vaults, what would be the rational for not releasing it? The fans who would be interesed in this release, complete or not, are not getting any younger. I fear that RCA/BMG/Sony/FTD are going to wait until those who would purchase such material are no longer around.

I think we'd all like 'something' from the vaults from opening night......even if its not complete

    Agreed!!

If the opening night show isn't complete, then release it as a 2-CD set with another show (complete or incomplete) from the '69 engagement...or maybe even just some "best of" leftover performances from the engagement??

Considering the historical nature of the opening night show, I can't believe it hasn't already been released (or talked about anyway)...

At this point its only like: FTD is saving the best/more interesting/rare for their last run and gave us a big ending, or, they actually don't have that. lol

Definitely two distinct possibilities. As we've talked about before, despite all the great material that FTD has given us over the years, there has to be a finite end to the label when they simply don't have anything else to release. Of course, we've already talked (in other threads) about how much longer the label can continue on, but at some point, there just won't be anything left in the vaults that Ernst deems worthy of release and that will be the end of FTD Records.

So you may be right, that something like the opening night '69 show is being held for a swan-song style ending to the label (perhaps the EOT material as well?). Or perhaps they simply don't have the tape...perhaps the picture Ken posted is just the tape box, but the tape itself is missing? Certainly not out of the realm of possibility, considering there are several tapes that RCA has boxes for with no tape in them.

Yes I thought of that myself, or perhaps the sound is bad, or the tape is damaged beyond repair.

Here is the site I found the photo and information at:
    http://rareelvispresley.com/
Near the bottom of the menu on the left is BMG Vaults and it has a first hand account of searching thru the various vaults for Elvis material.

Also at this site check out the "Not to be Found Materials" section they have quite a few things listed which they say may be in existence.

    WOW!!!!

I have never seen this website before!!! What am amazing resource just from the few minutes I spent browsing it just now...

I can't wait to do some more digging through this information, but I do have to say right off the top that I am a little skeptical of some of the information. For example, they say that the entire 5/11/74 LA performance was filmed? Does this mean professionally or fan-shot footage? I find it hard to believe that if this show (or some of the others listed) were indeed professionally shot that some of that footage hasn't been found and/or leaked out by now!! And if this information is correct, how does the webmaster know this stuff was actually filmed...what source(s) do they have to confirm this information??

Nevertheless, it is a VERY cool looking site and I can't wait to do some more digging! Thanks Ken for posting this!!

I think generations from now will unearth lost Elvis footage that nobody today knows about (including EPE or any of the experts from FECC) outside of the owners of the footage.

I would agree-but much of the footage that has surfaced in the last 35 years is mainly fan footage that is horribly out of focus, horribly lit, or shot from the balconys. The other footage which is clear and lit well usually ends up being very choppy and very haphazard in nature.
The gems of the fan footage are few and far between-but I love it when a new one surfaces.

Fortunately, technology continues to improve though so that lends hope to future fan-shot film finds. I can remember watching fan footage of Elvis years ago and it was bad, but then have seen the same footage within the least couple of years and because of the advances in computer technology, people are able to take that bad footage and correct it to make it very watchable! So there is hope...

Re: This is supposedly in RCA Vaults 7-31-69

That's not from July 31. Elvis did "That's All Right" and "Johnny B. Goode" on opening night (maybe others...don't have the list in front of me) and whoever made this track listing in 1979 got the date wrong. Could be a box for the August 3 dinner show that was originally marketed as opening night?

I'd love to hear the good news that 7/31/69 has been unearthed!
    I'm a roving roustabout...
