A rumor I heard about Cirque Du Soleil's Viva Elvis

I was told by my inside source back in Memphis that he heard from a reliable source that EPE and CKX were forced by Apollo to ax Viva Elvis due to cost for production. EPE had invested more than $50 million into the development of the show since 2009. Attendance has not been as low as the media has been told. But it unfortunately makes Elvis look bad from the way it's ending. The Chris Angel's Believe show by Cirque has lost a fortune due to poor attendance, but Cirque keeps it in production. The show is the worst financially on the strip for Cirque, and yet they cancel VE. That should tell everyone that the VE attendance is not as bad as we are led to believe.

They are replacing Elvis with "Zarkana". Here is the article.

Yes, I know about that. But it doesn't mention the reasoning behind it.

I'm sure money, money, money. I guess they were not seeing a return in their investment, if it was doing well then they would keep it. It is a shame they gave it the boot and as you said there where other shows doing worse than Viva Elvis.

My theory is that Apollo cut it to save cash for the company. Apollo only paid $510 million for CKX and its assets including EPE, Ali, IDOL, 219 Entertainment and So You Think You Can Dance TV reality show. I think they saw VE as a small profit that they could do without.

I would doubt that Apollo would cancel a show if it were making only a small profit-small profits in a huge corporation add up....
How would that save them cash?-That small amount of profit "added" to their cash.
Perhaps a breakeven situation would be grounds to cancel, but large corporations with a lot of fingers make their money a little here a little there.
Its like the Sillerman expansion, they could never get a handle on the premise-and it just never really jelled.

Because, EPE/CKX is not a large corporation. Their income annually is good but not as good as it could and should be. The whole purpose for the big Graceland overhaul and the Vegas resort casino was to increase their income. But as we all know that has not happened yet.

Funny when CKX took over everyone was screaming what a world wide force they were...now they are not large enough?
Regardless still makes no sense business wise-you just do not shut down projects which make money...your post says "Viva Elvis" was making money.....but Apollo closed them down because the money made was small-makes no sense.
The heavier lifting (start up costs)was already done-the show had been formulated and was running.
I'm not sure who your insider in Memphis is-but sometime the info just seems illogical.
I pride myself on some understanding of how business works and logic-this just does not seem logical.
If it is true that Apollo closed the show because of too small a profit(not lack of profit)-that does not say much for the business horse sense of those who make the decisions. Any company who starts a project knows it may be years before you regain the start up costs and then move to profit-entertainment is no different-small profit over time returns your investment and then profits increase.
As you point out it looks bad for Elvis that the show closed, regardless of he had absolutely no control over the creation or execution of it from begining to end....yet if your rumor is true, Apollo forced more negativity onto the image of Elvis-which is the backbone of CKX- which Apollo bought???
Kind of strange to undercut your investment.

Re: A rumor I heard about Cirque Du Soleil's Viva Elvis

Here is a short excerpt from a recent interview of what the producer of Circus Viva Elvis had to say about its problems :
.......... I talked separately with Daniel about the current Aria theater as “Viva Elvis” ............. “There are three options being looked at right now, we have a luxury of choice. We have an amazing partnership with MGM and are in conversation with them. We hope to be in a position to make an announcement pretty soon. … It is very important to come back with a concept and alternative that will meet the demographic of Aria.”

[B]I asked him what good had come to the company that had done no wrong previously with its Las Vegas shows and was there a learning experience from “Viva Elvis.” “I think what we’ve learned is two things. The first is that when people are looking for a Cirque De Soleil show, they are looking for a more acrobatic act. And going for an approach that was too biographic of Elvis I think was part of the problem.[/B

“There was no biography story with our Michael Jackson show because we had learned from Elvis. ..........
