Any news of Elvis On Tour Special Edition DVD

Since this year will be the 40th anniversary of the release of Elvis On Tour is there a special edition in the works ? Has any official news been released. In terms of new Elvis product for 2012 nothing else deserves to be given higher prioroty. A proper release is well overdue. An extended version of the documentary (similar to Through My Eyes) with a full concert on a another disc preferably the Hamptons Roads concert would be a real treat. On another note were any of the concerts filmed completely? If you add the footage of the Hamptons Roads concert from EOT with the outtakes on The Lost Performances it's still not the full show.

This DVD was the biggest dissappointment for me in some time. Absolutely NO extras or special features! Not one. And what was with that pic of EP on the home menu- look at how they shaped his hair.

And even though Elvis On Tour was filmed on 16mm (as opposed to TTWII which was filmed on 35mm in much higher quality) I thought the picture quality still leaved a lot to be desired. There was a lot of grain over the entire film and a lot of scratches- particularly on Seperate Ways.

DVD is on it's way out and Blu-ray is the future- if they re-release this it has to be on Blu-ray and remasterd from a better negative than last time. With the storage capacity of BR we could have the footage from every show in every single camera angle as well as a ton of extras and also the full film of the interview with Pierre Adige- but I'm not holding my breath......

I agree with all said , it was eagerly awaited at first but then soon became the biggest letdown release we probably have ever had.
Nothing new at all, no great improvements either, and we even lost the intro track, JOHNNY B, what a flop, this i think will not be rereleased anytime soon, after all we waited 30 yrs+ for this flop .......

There was some talk back this past summer that EPE is working with Time Warner on a special project for this year but that doesn't mean it is EOT related. It could be a special TV project where TW allows rare footage to be seen or just for the 35th Anniversary concert at the FedExForum in August. There could be a special edition of the movie with bonus footage without costing the company a fortune to put together. I'm thinking the original movie unedited with an additional disc of the Richmond show since it was least used in the movie to show newer fans what a full length Elvis concert was like. It's been said that about 90% of the show was filmed. Maybe throw in some backstage footage or the rehearsal of Always On My Mind too. I just don't see them giving us anything special like a deluxe edition with a large majority of unseen footage until the economy picks up and they can make a huge profit off of it. Also there seem to be some concerns about Elvis' visual appearance and him looking pale in the face. I still say it was the stage and camera lighting that caused that.

Re: Any news of Elvis On Tour Special Edition DVD

I partially blame the people who "leaked" literally all the unused film from EOT and TTWII a few years back. The film was then bootlegged in various forms all over the world-look at You Tubes videos.
I also blame the poor reception that TTWIISE got in 2001-it just did not sell well-and Turner spent over a million to put it together and ran promos for it on TCM for months. The economy was in pretty good shape in January 01.
(they premiered it early 01 on TCM before it went on sale and that also hurt it)
The more recent 2disc set of TTWIISE did not do much better, and the outtakes they included were not remastered)
EOT DVD did a little better-but not much.
The problem is without sales that warrant investing money to truely clean up outtakes and package/promote.....I just do not think its feasible in a business sense to do in todays economy or in better times. Sales have to be there beyond we fans.
The film isn't going anywhere and as long as it is kept protected properly Warners knows it has the upper hand.....no rush to them.
As a little older fan-I would love to see this stuff given the best restoration that is available and have it all put out in total-but I know that really good restoration, sound syncing, camera angles professionally edited to make the film like a regular release (and not just a collection of different angles thrown on a disc- one after the other) is costly and there must be profit waiting after the overhead is paid....that is the real problem.
The "Lost Performances VHS release" in the 90s was already 90% edited from the original years releases-but they never made it into the final edit of the films EOT/TTWII .....so it was relatively easy and cheap to package and release on VHS.
The bulk of the total 22-24 hours of EOT and approximately the same total hours for TTWII is piecemeal in form and totally raw.
I wish they would hire some of the internet wizards who have done wonders from their home computers to work on this raw footage-I'm sure it would be cheaper than the "Hollywood style restoration/editing" - but that would be hard considering the unions involved in studios.
If we get anything in 2012 I bet its a set similar to the 2 disc TTWIISE set which came out a few years back.

I was content with it finally being released on to dvd. Of course they were going to find some way to let us fans down.

@vivaelvis Where did you get that information about the Richmond show from? 90% ? that's news to me. About the show itself does anyone know what song he is singing when his lying on his back? One of his more tranquil numbers I'm guessing. For The Good Times ? I didn't really expect too much from the DVD last year in terms of extras. For future releases I think they should remove the multi screen/montage work I don't like that. If I'm not mistaken the montage effect was one of the main reasons it won the golden globe. Since Elvis is the star, he shouldn't be sharing a third of the screen with The backup singers. I don't mind if it cuts to footage of the band as long as Elvis remains the focus when he is being shown. The scene with the old man in the hat talking needs to be removed. Nothing against the guy of course, It's just strange that the producers couldn't come up with someone else. Maybe they were trying to provide some comic relief to the film. The last time I watched EOT that scene made me laugh because of how ridiculous it is.

The info on the Richmond show was once posted by an insider on FECC. As for what song he was singing while laying on his back. Actually he wasn't singing. Elvis would sometimes during that period of 71-72, drop to the floor in exhaustion from performing PSA and and lay on his back and would use it as a time to catch his breath before singing the next song, which was always Love Me.

About the split screen issue. This was done to give the viewers a better feel for a live concert, to show what all goes on behind Elvis. It was also used in the Aloha concert as well. Still to this day, it can be seen with modern day artist doing the same thing. Woodstock also did it, and the director of EOT also worked on the Woodstock documentary. I do agree that the old man seen should be removed.

I was disappointed in the release too. I was expecting more unreleased footage and more outtakes. This did come out on Blue-Ray but it was not great quality that you are accustom to seeing. But, a lot of movies that were not actually shot with High-Def cameras are not high quality either. I wanted the sound to be better too.

The old man scene is just embarrassing to watch. Even when I saw this at 11 years old, I would fast forward thru that part.

Re: Any news of Elvis On Tour Special Edition DVD

Split screen filmmaking was popular in the late 60s and into the 80s.
The original "Oceans 11" with the Rat Pack used it in 1960 as did many other features like Steve McQueens original "Thomas Crown Affair"
Musical documentaries used it quite a bit "Mad Dogs and Englishmen" "Let the Good times Roll", "Woodstock" all used it as did TTWII and EOT.
It seems a little dated today-but on the big screen it was great.

Re: Any news of Elvis On Tour Special Edition DVD

I bought the Blu Ray version last year and was expecting it to be a little better than it was

For all the reasons above I agree that there will be very little if anything added to this release in the near future. We are fans and we are very hard to please, our expectation are always very high. The market for a new release will be very low when you can pick up a DVD from a well known internet retailer for as little as £6.99. There is a dwindling market for some of these DVD's due to the lack of new material and more importantly a lack of creativity from Sillerman/EPE and the respective owners of the copyright material which has become fragmented.

In my opinion the future is bleak, the Elvis world is getting more and more fragmented by the year as copyrighted material & licences expire and their owners all want their slice of the action. if these guys could only just collaborate for the greater good.

Re: Any news of Elvis On Tour Special Edition DVD

@ ThreeCornPatches. According to all the sources I have read the April 9th afternoon show wasn't filmed. None of the 5 shows that were filmed did he sing Jailhouse Rock.

I don't know if much footage from other concerts was filmed but during the Love Me Tender scene in EOT there is a brief second of footage from either his concert in Charlotte or Albuquerque because he is wearing the White fireworks suit. It isn't the San Antonio concert because he was wearing the White Pinwheel suit for that show.

To me it seems highly unlikely that the producers would set up the cameras just to film him leaning over to give a lady a kiss.

There is a photo in the dvd booklet of the producers standing infront of reels of film which a few are labelled "Charlotte concert". When I mentioned this on another post someone pointed out that this would most likely be non concert footage like scenic footage taking on the road or footage of the band setting up. I don't find this explanation to be that convincing because the films reels are marked with descriptive labels like "Charlotte Arrival scenes and Charlotte set up but three are just labelled Charlotte which might indicate the concert as no specific titles are given. All the other film reels from the other concerts are labelled in the same manner.

It is my inderstanding that there is something like 22-24 hours of material from all the various filming done for EOT-but naturally not all of it is performances by Elvis. The producers would have specific things in mind that they wanted filmed in the various locations and to present the documentary in the form/structure they wanted. They had a general outline of things they wanted-storyboarded so to speak.
Some locations, according to Joe Tunzi, certain things were filmed-and only those things....so its very hard to know how much was shot of Elvis performing was shot in each location/city. The haphazard way the unused footage was stored contributed to knowing "what was what"
But just looking at clips that have surfaced on places like "You Tube" does give hope that many performances are still unreleased officially.

Re: Any news of Elvis On Tour Special Edition DVD

Unfortunately, as Ken already mentioned, the end-all, be-all of any project is profit and considering the time and money that went into the TTWII-SE project with only a limited financial return, I highly doubt that a project of this scale will be done for EOT. As Elvis fans it is a sad thing to have to consider, but I just don't see Time Warner (or whatever companies are involved) putting those kind of resources into an EOT project when the TTWII-SE project wasn't financially successful.

I know Ernst has said before that he is holding on to the EOT audio material so that they could try and release something in conjunction with a video project for EOT, but at some point, I would think that Ernst would realize that an EOT video project is not in the foreseeable future and would try and do something with at least some, if not all, of the audio material from EOT. My guess is that any EOT material will be released through the FTD label as I don't think that a mainstream release is something that would work well for this type of stuff. Could they release one of the complete concerts on a single CD mainstream release (like the Hampton Roads show) -- of course it's possible, but again, I am thinking the EOT material is destined to be distributed via the FTD label.

Re: Any news of Elvis On Tour Special Edition DVD

Today I read the news (source: Elvis For Everyone fanclub) that there are plans for a TV Special, compiled of not released Elvis On Tour rehearsals for 2012.

On a side note this article mentions; a Madison Square Garden project, and an unnamed bigger project for this year.

2013 is rumored to have a special 40th anniversary release of Aloha From Hawaii.

As always, we have to wait and see, and read and learn more about what is going to happen.

That really sounds good-if its going on TV I would assume the clean up and remastering would be a must....so we win on that point.
Also if its on TV more chance people who have not seen him in such a light will be be exposed to him.
And lastly..... if it does well........ perhaps more of the unused concert footage will be given the same TV chance for another special down the line....and we win again.
    Hope this happens.
