While it's nice to see him finally get a diamond award I don't know if this looks good or bad for Elvis. He's the king of rock and has sold over 1 billion records worldwide and just now getting a diamond award and for of all things, Christmas music. I wonder what is the next closest? Probably a gospel album.

In any case, this is a WONDERFUL honor for The King although it is a sore reminder that if RCA had kept proper records of album/single sales back when Elvis was alive, perhaps he would be a lot closer to Diamond Awards or multi-platinum awards for more of his albums & singles.

Legitimately, Elvis has probably recieved enough credit for multiple diamond awards. However, RCS's audit process hads been so poor over the past 40 years, he doesn't receive the credit. Certainly, we all know better.
Currently, the RIAA certification criteria for albums are:
500,000 units: Gold album.
1,000,000 units: Platinum album.
2,000,000 or more units: Multi-Platinum album.
10,000,000 units: Diamond album.
Multi-disc albums are counted once for each disc within the album if it is over 100 minutes in length. For example, each copy of OutKast's Speakerboxxx/The Love Below (running time of 134:56), and Shania Twain's Up! (145:44), both double albums, were counted twice, meaning each album was certified diamond after 5 million copies were shipped. The 100 minute requirement does not apply to albums released in the vinyl era so double albums such as Pink Floyd's The Wall and The Beatles' White Album are counted double even though their running times are under the 100 minute minimum.
Unlike these latter two albums, the reason the 'Aloha From Hawaii' (currently 5 X Platinum) and 'Elvis In Concert' (currently 3 X Platinum) albums do not qualify for 'double' RIAA sales is that when they were released on CD post 1982 they were on 1 CD whereas the Beatles and Pink Floyd Albums were 'always' 2 album and 2 CD packages. Looks as though BMG (yet again) were not taking care of business at this time. Whilst giving the Elvis fan better value for money they sacrificed his legacy of at least 8 million sales including a Diamond Award for 'Aloha From Hawaii'.

So here's a question for you Brian...how many units of the YOUNG MAN WITH THE BIG BEAT box set would have to be sold in order for that one to be certified gold, platinum, multi-platinum and/or diamond?
Since the running time of YOUNG MAN is surely over 100 minutes, does that mean that each set sold will count 5 times toward the overall sales figures? So in order for the set to be certified gold (500,000 units sold), YOUNG MAN would have to physically sell 100,000 box sets (100,000 sets times 5 discs in the set = 500,000 units)??? Am I somewhere in the right neighborhood with my thinking on this??

Didn't knew about that logic. Then its not out of this world to think that "Young Man" will quickly achieve gold status.

Its great news for sure.
Elvis Presley who came from the era of promoting single sales..... when albums were only used to sell singles- has proved that given the differences in marketing, accounting and trends over his career that he still sells and overcomes the differences.
Amazingly this 10 million total does not include 3 million in sales that are credited to the 1957 original Christmas album-this is only the total for the 1970 reissue which left off some gospel songs and added -Mama Liked the Roses.
But that changes the track listing so its considered a completely different release.

Well, you would think so in terms of ONLY having to sell 100,000 physical units!
HOWEVER...you're also talking about a set which averages around $100 per unit, so it's not probably going to sell as quickly as a single CD which would sell for around $10-$15. At least that's my opinion...
We'll see what happens...
