While it's nice to introduce that historical year of events in Elvis' life to a new generation, it's nothing new to the fanbase. The only new thing would be the lost concert from the Louisiana Hayride. However, the tape isn't as clear as some want to believe. There's much better sounding audience recordings from the 70's that are clearer. In fact, I'm shocked it even made the mainstream level and not FTD.
I do hope that Sony does something with EOT and the year of '72 like this next year. Now THAT would draw massive attention from the fanbase.![]()

I know as a fan since 1985, that there isn't anything new appart from that concert, which is anything out of this world, although its cool. But still, the whole packing and all, the release as an event, is quite interesting to me, its a collectible, its a nice piece of land to me.
Yet, Legacy its not there for the old fans like us, but for the new generations, for people that wasn't around when the complete 50's masters box was released, for people that were to young to remember the Elvis in the 90's, THIS is the big deal, and there is a lot of material unavailable right now unless you got the complete masters 30 cd's box, so, for them, this is new stuff in a way, plus the historical value of this recordings deserve this treatment. It goes on the same line as Elvis is Back! or From Elvis in Memphis, its about keeping Elvis catalogue shinny and fresh for generations to come, which, future wise, its quite an important move.
Is not much about what's new on it, but it is about making a statement, a tribute to Elvis early RCA recordings.
No On Tour set but a overpriced set with only one cd of unreleased material,im sorry i dont see this set flying off shelves or will it be another mail order thing, will not buy this, its simply overdone,i get it ernie likes the 50's.
Will On Tour get the same treatment?,i personally just hope for a 3 cd set and in regular format.
Im not into collecting books, this set cost over $100 usd milk it baby!!!!
Are the Elvis on Tour '72 recordings as relevant as his '56 recordings? some people need to think outside their fan head.
Plus it is not time yet for the Elvis on Tour/MSG, wait until Summer 2012 and then we will see. Plus, there are only two (almost identical) unreleased shows in full stereo from April '72, as far as I know (And they are both well known in the bootleg/import world). All alternate takes from the March '72 session have been released, so... its not like there is going to be a lot more of unreleased material there neither.
Just for the record, I'm also hoping for a box set like this covering On Tour/MSG, but still, can't we have both '56 and '72?
I will be honest this set does nothing for me,the sound will not be great im betting.
I dont collect books and dont like big sets,i would be paying over $100 for one cd of stuff i dont have, not good value for me.
The on tour set is overdue and the on tour rehearsals were scattered on 2 ftd's,which was stupid in my view.
Doesnt matter whats been out on bootleg, there 3 shows not put out from On tour, lets see if on tour is given the same respect,
although i hope its not a gaudy big book package like the young man set.
For those who like this sort of thing then enjoy, they are pricing things out of many fans reach.
Well, the On Tour anniversary release next year, most likely will be happening in FTD's label so... and it will probably be a book and a 3cd set, its going to be unfortunately expensive.
A MSG original LP anniversary is the one most likely to be happening on the mainstream label, don't think a big set like this will be on the works, but a handsome release containing two shows and some bonus tracks will be the trend for this one.
Unfortuantely, the original album cannot be remixed as the master tape is missing from the vaults. This is why it has yet to be upgraded.
The On Tour material has been held back for the mainstream not for the FTD label. When that comes out remains a mystery but 2012 is the 40th and that's a big anniversary year and it could be the time for it. Especially since EOT did so well at US theaters in 2010 and in dvd sales.

On Tour should be a mainstream box set,not a book release from ftd, they could do a book with no cd and that would be fine but dont make people buy something they dont want to get the cd's.
I am surprised by the young man set,so costly and a main release, bet i see alot of used sets pretty quick up for sale.
Interesting interview...and I am really excited about the promotion this set is receiving!!! Let's hope other releases receive this kind of advertising treatment in the future!!

Well, I think this set has been getting some negative comments here and there by fans who are REALLY waiting for an ELVIS ON TOUR set of some kind. And personally, I am one of those many fans who are waiting for an EOT release...HOWEVER, considering this year marks the 55th anniversary of perhaps Elvis' most prolific and music changing year of his career, there was absolutely no reason why RCA/Sony shouldn't have capitalized on this historic event with a project like YOUNG MAN!!!
Plus, fans really have to love the promotion this set is getting and let's be honest...there hasn't been a package like this released on the MAIN label in several years!! Yes, there have been many releases on the import labels similar to this, but those have been marketed strictly to the fans!! The YOUNG MAN set is being marketed not only to the fans, but the general record buying public as well, which is SUPER!!! Hopefully RCA/Sony's advertising campaign will pay off not only in attracting new fans, but also in proving successful enough that other future main label projects will receive this kind of promotional campaign!!!
Sadly, there will be fans who will bash this project for one reason or another....that's a given. But I truly think the majority of fans, and casual music lovers as well, will really appreciate this set and give it a big thumbs-up!!!

Mike, the thing is On Tour set has been passed over time after time, the ftd's are lame in my view,6363 sunset covered 3 differt topics.
I just wonder if on tour will get the same respect, just please put it in a box set form not a book.
I am surprised this set is a mainstream release as i dont see it selling very well.
And if it fails it will be another excuse for sony to sit on the on tour material.
Im not a big fan of the 50's shows, but if this was a single or 2 cd set id think about getting it.
I am also a tom petty fan and was annoyed when they came out with the special edition of the live anthology set,it has a record a book and some useless stuff. price $100 oh and yes a bonus cd you dont get with the 4 cd regular style release.
The regual version was only $20 and you get 4 discs but making a special edition that cost $80 more and putting the 5th disc in there is something id ask mr petty myself,i find it annoying.
I dont begrudge people who have differt taste, everything is getting too expensive.
Certainly interesting points Kev regarding adding in all the "extras" to run up the price, instead of just releasing the CD's and keeping the price down. And I certainly wouldn't be one bit surprised if somewhere down the line, the CD's from the YOUNG MAN set are re-released by themselves without all the extra stuff!!
I certainly have to disagree with your opinion on the FTD CD's being "lame". Yes, some are definitely better than others, but as I've said before, how many other artists who have been gone for over 30 years still have CD's being released on a regular basis AND have a special "collector's label" dedicated just to them??? Obviously the FTD CD's won't please everyone, and most people will criticize (myself included) the releases they are putting out...why this release now, where is this material, why another soundboard, etc... But considering the alternative, I think most fans realize the value of FTD and are happy to have these CD's. Fans have different tastes, and not all FTD releases are going to please all fans...but at least they are available.

The ftd's lame comment was about 6363 sunset,i do wish they would have just went the classic album route instead of releasing what you have.
But i am selling some of my ftd outtake disc, cause i know the material will be duplicated.
Im a fan of the people,i dont dislike every release.
Back to on tour,6363sunset was not done properly, there should have been a 2 cd rehearsal set.
Would most fans not have preferred that?
I like bang for my buck, value for my money, ftd is not all bad nor all great.
Yes Elvis has a collectors label, yes he is the only one,but why not do it right?
Just excisting isnt enough for me,do it right, get the right sound on every release, classy booklets.
One final thought on the on tour if they were to release a 4 cd set with 2 shows and 2 disc of rehearsals with proper sound, you will hear nothing but praise from me.
Anyhow its all friendly chatter.

In fact, a 2 CD set with both '56 Albums plus the singles, is going to be released in the same fashion "Elvis is Back!/Something for Everybody" where.
No, the unreleased concert stuff will be reseved for the box set. I understand its expensive and not everybody will be pleased with the "collectors" stuff, but that's the trend today, music industry is at a crossroads now, CD's are not selling anymore, people will just download the stuff legally or not, so in order to make people buy the "tangible" stuff, trend is make it collectible, add a book, a vinyl, poster, and bonus tracks not on the download version of it, its NOT about Elvis or Sony or oldies, even contemporary bands are selling them selfs this way, and it is actually working (Check out what's Radiohead doing). Some bands are even giving away for free the download, and offering the collectible box set for an expensive price and against all odds, the big boxes are selling. Young Man WIth the Big Beat is actually Sony taking Elvis to this very current way of selling music, one that in a very strange time for the music industry is working, so I think is a good move.
WE ALL OLD FANS are crazy for the On Tour stuff, again, let's wait for 2012 before bashing everything out, right now its Elvis debut at RCA time, and guys, we all love diffrent aspects or times in Elvis career, but we got accept that it was '56 what put Elvis in the map as a musical revolution, so its natural this material got the big treat. It does deserve it.
Anyhow, even if we are not buying it, I think its clever to be as most suportive to this release, give it good reviews as fans as other releases in the future depends on how good this one goes, so...
Personaly Im SO SO HAPPY AND PROUD that Elvis material (no matter what period) is recieving this handsome and most respectful treatment, I'm so tired of all the many cheap releases that Elvis usually recieves all the way since 70's camden days, those have only been detrimental. The Complete Masters box and this one, are sure honoring the man, even if, I know, are not in everybodys pocket to own.

Economy all around the world is crappy right now, so sure, is not going to be platinium in a week, lol, music industry is in decay and even gold record standars have been lowered, this release is as I said in the previous post, part of a current trend in selling music. YET, and despite all the negative aspects of it, this is BIG BIG Thumbs up! and for a simple reason, it is Elvis music being released in a respectful, inteligent, and handsome way, something most needed among tons of crappy greatest blaa blaaa that have only build Elvis image as a merely comercial artifact with no musical relevance.
A release as Young Man With the Big Beat DOES makes a clear statment on Why Elvis, why he is historically and still today musically relevant. That got to be welcome anyhow.
