    Re: Amarillo '77

I just received my copy of AMARILLO '77 but haven't had time to check it out yet, but I am reading some pretty negative reviews that this CD is one of the worst shows of his entire career (although not quite as bad as NEW HAVEN '76 according to one Elvis blog) and even most of the bonus tracks included on the CD aren't very good.

So, I am asking those of you that have listened to it already...are these reviews true? Is AMARILLO '77 really THAT bad??

I have this and actually like it. The sound is good and Elvis seems to be enjoying himself. It certainly is not 1970 or 1971 Elvis, but looked at on its own merits in 1977, it really isn't that bad. I like it.

I really like this album. Compared with so many poor 76 soundboards (bad show, flat sound), this one is nice to listen to.

Mike, what is your assessment of this release? The bonus tracks do make it sound interesting and I suppose I have heard them but it's been a while.

Glad to hear the rest of your comments.

Actually, I have been so busy I only recently had a chance to FINALLY give this one a spin and I have to say that this is certainly not nearly as bad as people have made it out to be. Yes, ARE YOU LONESOME TONIGHT is certainly not his best effort, but it is in line with the other '77 versions of the song where Elvis goofs up the lyrics...most likely because of the whole "gay routine" with Charlie. The rest of the album is pretty average for a 1977 show. His voice does sound a bit strained in places, but I do like the version of MY WAY he performs. MOUNTAIN and HURT are also well performed.

The bonus tracks aren't really much of an addition to those fans that have heard the bootlegs before. There really wasn't anything new to my ears...some of the material was in better sound quality than I remembered from the bootlegs, but the material itself wasn't new or earth shattering.

Hope this helps you my friend!!

Uhm everybody seems to look over his last version of Steamroller Blues, which was an outstanding version, And new in soundboard.
