Interesting Article on "Double Trouble"

I found this article on the Elvis Australia website, which I found quite interesting with a different perspective on the movie DOUBLE TROUBLE.

Well I kind of liked the film when it came out-I also liked the crazy Wiere Brothers slapstick (they were also in a the Hope/Crosby film Road to Rio).
I liked the cloak and dagger aspect of the film and the seedy atmosphere created in the film.
I think if you just don't take this kind of film to serious-its pretty good entertainment.
I do agree the "Old McDonald" number could have been left out and I would have liked the film more.

Honestly, I think if the OLD MACDONALD sequence had been deleted from the film, it probably would have received much better press than it did/does. It always seems like that part of the movie is spotlighted when discussing DOUBLE TROUBLE, which draws attention (naturally) to that sequence in the film. Unfortunately, the bad press of OLD MACDONALD does indeed overshadow the "cloak and dagger" aspect of the film...an aspect which was quite different for an Elvis movie. It's really too bad that the mystery part of the movie wasn't more developed by the writers...it really could have made DOUBLE TROUBLE standout as a much better movie.

Unfortunately, the "Old Macdonald Factor" also overshadows the other songs featured in the movie. Granted the soundtrack material is far removed from the soundtracks to JAILHOUSE ROCK or KING CREOLE, but still...songs like CITY BY NIGHT, THERE'S SO MUCH WORLD TO SEE, LONG LEGGED GIRL and COULD I FALL IN LOVE were above average and would probably have received more favorable reviews if it weren't for the extra attention given to OLD MACDONALD.

With just a little more development to the script and perhaps another good song or two, DOUBLE TROUBLE could have been quite a movie...

Double Trouble has have to win the price of "most uncool wardrobe ever used by Elvis on any movie". (Except for the outfit on City By Night).

Again, another big failed attempt to keep Elvis in tune with times. The Elvis movie formula, as the all family light musical comedy, had its gold era from G.I. Blues to Roustabout, with Girl Happy and Tickle Me being the most they could have streched it with passable results. Then it was time to move on to another kind of pictures. Sure, Double Trouble was much better than Harum Scarum, yet, since '64, Elvis movies and Elvis himself was way below from cool or interesting, and all his movies after '64 look like a failed attempt to achieve an unclear goal.

Actually I liked the wardrobe, the Red Jacket with the black stitching like an X on the front, the jacket he wore singing "I Love Only One Girl" thought it was very cool-but I know what you are saying, it was not what most rock stars were wearing....not current looking.
The further Elvis got from his Wallis contracts the more the Colonel just looked for money and perks that he could squeeze from each new 3 picture deal-so after 64 it was not about anything but money and the film was not important.
Elvis admitted that he became ill when he read some of those latter scripts-but Elvis never saw the script before the deal was made-the Colonel would set up the picture deals, and then tell Elvis "whatever" about the future films to be made and then the producers would do what they wanted with no worry about the quality of anything except box office gross and net.

I know, what an *****, just thinking money wise, Col. could have made much more money taking what he had in Elvis the movie star and the performer in '61-'63, and take him to the next level. But he was such a cheap carny.
