As Recorded At Madison Square Garden vs An Afternoon In The Garden

I saw this wonderful thread topic over at another forum and thought I would bring it to this forum's attention as well.

Which show would you consider to be the better?

To me, the afternoon show is more superior of the two. From the set list to his incredible vocals. Not to mention the rarities like I'll Remember You and the bluesy Reconsider Baby. Whereas the evening concert is a weaker show of the two. Plus, he sounds a little tired and not as energetic as the previous show earlier. Which makes sense as to why he would be after performing two shows in one day. Another reason is the sound quality. The afternoon show is more clear and upfront and the audience is loud. In the evening show, the audio is weak and hollow sounding. The audience sounds distant. The bass mix is too upfront and drowns out Elvis' vocals and the band. A new mix of this show is definitely needed for the best possible listening experience.

In comparison, take a look at the tracklistings for each show recorded by RCA.

Also, while we're on the supject of these historical concerts, I made a fantasy album cover for a potential 3 disc set (2 CD-1 DVD) highlighting these shows in superior sound. I consider this to be my baby project, my best work to date!

I love "An Afternoon in the Garden" much better show, vocals, energy...I have often wondered why the other show was the one which came out in 72.

You aren't alone on that thought. I would have liked to have been a fly on the wall when that decision was made.

Without knowing the real difference, in my head I tend to favor An Afternoon In The Garden. Today I will give 'em both a spin again and make a better decision

If we got a better mix/right speed of the evening show, I'll stick with it.

Now the "An Afternoon" release has a lot of added echo/reverb typical of Elvis 90's releases, it was cool sounding then, but not so much now.

The right mix of both is most needed for a new release, that must be the goal! please

I agree. Both shows need to be newly mixed. Hopefully that's the plan for the 40th in 2012.

Would be a great job for FTD to do, but also I think would do very well officially released, these are two of his best performances and they are most certainly historic!

I like the afternoon show for all the reasons mentioned above. Also like the lead in with 2001 and the excitment of the audience coming through much better. I always get goosebumps hearing the crowd go crazy and wishing I could have experienced that.

Same here. I picked up a while back at WalMart for five bucks was amazed at how great it sounded in the car. As a matter of fact, it is sitting in my passenger seat with a few others as we speak. That ought to tell you how much I listen to it.

I guess I'll be the oddball here. Never understood people's regard for the afternoon show as compared to the evening concert. The latter rocked harder, the band was hot and the crowd absolutely wild when compared to the tamer afternoon show. Better versions of Polk Salad Annie, Hound Dog and he litterally screams his way through Can"t Stop Loving You....awesome version. Best version of Never Been to Spain also. The only advantage the afternoon show has is the inclusion of Reconsider Baby, but even this version is fairly lame and James Burton sounds as if he's trying to decide whether to play it as country or blues. Not some of his better work for sure.

They made the correct choice in which show to release.

I can't agree with any of that, but that's just me.
