Johnny Depp To Play Elvis In Movie?

Personally, I don't like the sound of this movie, supposedly concentrating on the 'darker side' of Elvis.

I wouldnt mind seeing it. People always seem to dance around the "darker side". I have never seen what the big deal is about it. It was as much a part of Elvis' life as everything else. I like Depp as an actor, but I dont know if I could see him playing Elvis. I always thought the Elvis tv movie should have picked up a year or two after the 68 special. JRM could have grown his hair longer in that time and played a convincing (imo) Vegas era Elvis.

Myself, I do like Johnny Depp very much. I feel he's a great actor butI'm sick of the dark side of Elvis. I feel I've yet to see anything but. Why can't someone concentrate of the joyous side of Elvis for a change?

About the movie: I think it's great. The story of a young 21-year old to start the modern music era, being crowned as King Of Rock'n Roll, having everything anyone could want, celebrating one success after another, died only 21 years later. That story is sad and intriguing.

With an actor like Johnny Depp the movie gets a lot more creditable. I can't imagine it will turn out to be trashy. I only hope EPE/Sony will be smart enough to make it possible that the original music (studio and live tracks) are available for the movie. It would be an unbelievable mistake to let people watch a movie about the King, but have them listen to a soundalike (without many of those people realizing it)

Somehow, I get the impression that there will be very little music action in this film, which may be a good thing. After all, who can portray Elvis on stage - NO ONE. It may be that Depp wants to portray Elvis' demise and the reasons for it i.e. drugs, The Colonel, illness, lack of challenge and boredom. We will just have to wait to see if the film comes to fruition and details of the script. It will also depend on whether EPE will allow footage from the 76/77 period.

I think this is good news, its says nothing about the director, but J.Deep is a great actor, and I'm sure his performance will throw a diffrent light to that controvertial period in Elvis life.

Definetively a performance by someone of the like of Deep will put a side the wrong image of the late Elvis as the fat hamburger eater vegas clown, that old lie that his impersonactors gladly have put upfront.

I'm sure Deep will do, if this happens, the best late Elvis to date.

I guess I wouldn't have a problem with the movie coming out, IF the story was told the proper way so that it doesn't come off showing Elvis as just an overeating, pill popping parody, as Raised on Rock has eluded to.

If the movie showed the real reasons why Elvis was in the state he was in toward the end of his life...the divorce, the endless string of concert dates to pay off his corrupt managers "supposed" gambling debts, the lack of ability to grow as an artists with quality recording material because of his managers back room publishing deals, the group of "hangers on's" that were surrounding Elvis, his numerous health issues, his constantly being in the spotlight, etc., then I think it might show people that there was more to Elvis' eventual decline then just the prescription medications, food binges, etc.

As for Johnny Depp being cast in the role, it would certainly bring BIG box office to the movie, that's for sure. As for his credibility as Elvis, although I'm not really in tune with his entire movie catalog, I have seen bits and pieces of various Johnny Depp movies and he certainly does have the ability to get into character very well, so I don't necessarily know if this would be a stretch for him.

It will be VERY interesting to see if this project comes to see the light of day...

What he did to play Hunter S. Thompson in Fear and Loathing in Vegas was quite impresive. He became Mr. Hunter S. Thompson. Deep do know how to really inmerse in a character and become one. I'm sure he will do a decent Elvis at least.

I see what you are saying, but how many movies can be made about the Sun era throught the 68 Special without it getting stagnant? Elvis didnt pass in 68. He passed in 77. So why ignore it in biopics? I have never strayed from that part of his life. It just shows me that Elvis was human like everybody else. But thats just my opinion. BTW, congrats on the 2000th post Kathy.

Thank you for putting it that way. I guess thats what I was trying to get across. I dont want someone making fun of him. I just want someone to tell the whole Elvis story, not part of it.

I agree with you Mike....if as you said, they show the reasons Elvis ended up the way he did. I can't exactly see Depp as Elvis but he is very good in putting himself into characters. I can see Adam Lambert easier but I'm not sure he would be up to the part...I could be wrong. I will want to see the movie but if Depp just portrays him as all others did, I may not feel the same about him.
