I guess everyone is entitled to their opinion but it`s hard to see how someone could see Elvis,as he was in TTWII, as a man in any kind of decline...he looked healthy and happy and enjoying his music. It was said on here recently about how some people, mostly people who don`t know much about Elvis, see the image of Elvis in the `70s in a jumpsuit and associate that with his so-called decline, his final years...whatever you want to call it. I don`t get it...
As for the "campy blandness" remark...don`t see where he picked that up from.Sometimes people see what they want to see, sometimes people say things just to stir up a reaction..hard to know. Luckily though reviews like this are pretty rare when it comes to TTWII...most people see it as being as great as it really is.

I think he was in top physical shape in 1970! He looked much better than an ordinary man in the middle of his 30s. This is my opinion.

it all depends on what the author considers to be Elvis' peak. If he thinks Elvis peaked in 1968 or 1969, then yes, the decline starts right after the peak.

Artistically Elvis did peak in 1968/1969. And yes, in that period he was more energetic than he would every be after that period. But Elvis did develop his entertainer skills, he did develop his voice and repertoire.

I think it would have been safer and smarter to say that the decline started after the Aloha. Where all good things fell in place in 1968/1969, everything seemed to be falling apart in 1973 right after that milestone in his career.

I think people just see a jumpsuit and automatically think decline

they forget that so many 70's performers copied Elvis' jumpsuits

and that the jumpsuits were not some lounge lizard thing (that would be a tux), but rather the karate suit combined with the country and western costume tradition of decoration.

Elvis was a whole entertainer - he had the looks, the moves, the voice and he had the stage presence - part of putting on a show is wearing something better than street clothes

an Elvis show has a sense of occasion

something very lacking in entertainment now, when celebs race each other to prove they are regular folks

well, if you're a regular folk, then why I am paying to see you? there's no fantasy or escapism or inspiration served by regular folk (unless they are in a dire situation that they rise to the occasion)

I have heard others say the 1970s were the decline of Elvis-but that is incorrect-they lump together every year and think it was a bad period. Mainly they think 75-77 when actually 1970-73 were some of his best performing years.......they assume.... instead of investigate and look indepth.
Others think of his peak period as 54-60 and everything after was decline....once again not true.

Most people I meet seem to think Elvis in a jumpsuit equals "over-weight" Elvis. It's very sad, really, and upsets me extremely. I feel like I'm constantly having to defend my hero.

Although Elvis was a bit heavier in 1975, he looked quite happy and had some pretty good concerts in that year from what I've heard. I always considered his real declining years as '76 and '77.
