Yes
Maybe
No
I think Elvis should have won a grammy for both of these songs. I don't see how he didn't. What do you think? Please take the time to vote.![]()

No doubt at all! They are both fabulous message songs.
I think he was not given his full due by the Grammys-I'm not sure why..........perhaps he was just too big, and in the industries eyes it was a minus, instead of a plus.
Work in Progress!
What were the songs that were in competition during the time In the Ghetto and Don't Cry Daddy were recorded? I think both songs stand up very well on their own however, one also has to take into consideration the competing songs that were eligible.
The fact that Elvis never won a grammy for a rock is truly astonishing!
the beatles didn't either

Elvis was nominated in' 69 for You'll Never Walk Alone. Losing to Jake Hess - Beautiful Isle of Somewhere
the 1969 male noms were
Jose Feliciano - Light My Fire
Bobby Goldsboro - Honey Lyrics
O.C. Smith - Little Green Apples
Richard Harris - Macarthur Park Lyrics
Glen Campbell - Wichita Lineman Lyrics

should Elvis had won more Grammy's yes, but lots of fabulous ground breaking artists have never or rarely won a Grammy. And 50 years ago they were more conservative than they are now.

I never looked for trouble but I never ran.
Well this was the competition. Can't say if Mac Davis was superior than Joe South as a songwriter in '69, but definetively In The Ghetto deserved a nomination at least. Suspicious Minds deserved a nomination as record of the year as well as best male vocal performance. Yet Suspicious Minds importance has grown with time but back then, Aquarius/Let The Sunshine was THE "hip" record that "defined" that year, blaaa... today Aquarius sounds too dated and less than a half of the people that is familiar with Suspicious Minds remembers to Let the Sunshine in..
The Beatles Abbey Road or The Who's Tommy where 1969 landmarks, but it was Blood Sweat and Tears by Blood Sweat and Tears (who?) the lucky Album of the year. So...
Anyhow, here are some of the winner in '69.
5th Dimension artist. Bones Howe, producer. WON: Record Of The Year in 1969 for Aquarius/Let The Sunshine In (The Flesh Failures)
Blood, Sweat And Tears artist. James William Guercio, producer. WON Album Of The Year 1969 for Blood, Sweat And Tears.
Joe South, songwriter. WON Song Of The Year 1969 for Games People Play
Crosby, Stills And Nash artist, WON Best New Artist Of The Year 1969
Henry Mancini, arranger. WON Best Instrumental Arrangement 1969 for Love Theme From Romeo And Juliet

Great info guys! Thank you.

Thanks for the information everyone. I also think that at least one of these great songs should have received a nomination. Whether or not they should have one is another matter as there were some very good songs that year. Macarthur Park ?! What were they thinking?!
The fact that Elvis didn't win a non-gospel Grammy shows just how ridiculous the Grammys are
I don't know for sure if this song was really relevant enough in 1969. I mean, there was heavy competition. But it would be nice (and fair) to have given Elvis some more recognition for his comeback as contemporary artist (eventhough it lasted so very short)

Well I guess the '71 Life Time Achievment was basically that.
And then in '72 another for the "He TOuch Me" album, not bad either.
But yes, is odd that he never got one for any of his signature records, today many of those are regarded as monumental in music history, while many songs that recieved a grammy today are pretty much forgoten and considered irrelevant. So...
Totally agree, although if we consider Elvis love for gospel music, what gospel meant to Elvis, and his inspiration and dedication when he recorded it, those Grammys were telling.
Also is telling that Elvis never cared about the dam thing as he never ever showed up to recieve any to them. As he did for many other awards.
I think the main reason he did not go to awards ceremonys such as the Grammys was the Col and his insistence that Elvis not perform for free, or reduced fees.
Elvis listened to the Col without much question for most his career.
The only award I know of that Elvis actually went to the ceremony was the "Ten Outstanding Young Men award in 1970"
The Col. could not tell him it was not wise to go, or demand money from the people giving the award to him since this award had nothing to do with the entertainment industry. It was an honor that had gone in the past to John Kennedy, Robert Kennedy, Orson Welles, etc.....so Elvis was in good company.
I have seen photos of Elvis accepting awards but usually they were brought to him somewhere Vegas, Hollywood sets, etc......
Ron Ziegler the press secretary for Nixon was also on of the young men in the 10 awarded he said this about meeting Elvis:
"I think he (Elvis) was very pleased to receive the award, and it was an honor to him,and he so indicated,he was expressing a little discomfort of how he was going to react and to relate to the other people who were there,so we talked about that a little bit. It appeared to me at that time that he wanted to reach out and talk to someone different to that what he could find in his entourage. I didn't get the impression that he was limited or dull witted,I found him to be somewhat articulate and poised individual,I did sense however an individual who was withdrawn and an individual who was somewhat shy. I think all of us were moved by Elvis. He was a natural nice man,I liked him."
Work in Progress!
Yes he should ! they are really great message songs and I love them both .
He was the firstest with the mostest.
''In the ghetto'' was nominated for song of the year at the grammys.
The song of the year award is given to the songwriter so Mac Davis was nominated for the award, but he lost.
''Suspicious minds'' deserved to be nominated for song of the year but two songs in the same category for Elvis would be too much.
''Suspicious minds'' did win record of the year at the Memphis music awards which Vernon Presley accepted.
''Don't cry daddy'' did get a nomination for single of the year at the Academy of country music but lost to Merle Haggard ''Okie from Muskgoogiee'' (Sp?)
If ''Don't cry daddy'' could get a nomination for best country single at the Academy of country music the grammys could have but so many songs are released each year.
