Worst Elvis song from the 1970's

Has to be "The Last Farewell"
I cringe every time I hear it...

    The Last Farewell
There's a ship lies rigged and ready in the harbor
Tomorrow for old England she sails
Far away from your land of endless sunshine
To my land full of rainy skies and gales
And I shall be aboard that ship tomorrow
Though my heart is full of tears at this farewell

For you are beautiful, I have loved you dearly
More dearly than the spoken word can tell
For you are beautiful, I have loved you dearly
More dearly than the spoken word can tell

    I've heard there's a wicked war a-blazing
And the taste of war I know so very well
Even now I see the foreign flag a-raising
Their guns on fire as we sail into hell
I have no fear of death, it brings no sorrow
But how bitter will be this last farewell

For you are beautiful, I have loved you dearly
More dearly than the spoken word can tell
For you are beautiful, I have loved you dearly
More dearly than the spoken word can tell

Though death and darkness gather all about me
My ship be torn apart upon the seas
I shall smell again the fragrance of these islands
And the heaving waves that brought me once to thee
And should I return home safe again to England
I shall watch the English mist roll through the dale

For you are beautiful, I have loved you dearly
More dearly than the spoken word can tell
For you are beautiful, I have loved you dearly
More dearly than the spoken word can tell

I like Elvis' rendition of 'The Last Farewell' too

'What, honey ? ..... one scarf for the balcony ?! ........... OK ........... gimme a baseball ! ............ there's no way unless you put a rock in it'.

    (Las Vegas - 7th December 1975)

I too, love that song. However, one that I can do without is from the Love Letters album. That would be "Life."
Won't you sing me away to a summer night, let me hold her in my arms again.

It just goes to show you that everyones tastes are different, (and I know I am going to cop a lot of flak with this one) but I still can't listen to a full 'Burning Love'....I have tried, and God knows every time I turned around in Memphis this year it was playing somewhere, but I just don't like it.
I'm not saying it was the worst song Elvis did in the '70's, and yes 'Life' probably takes that honour........

It's not that I hate the song but the question was "What do I think was the worst Elvis song from the 70's?" I had to answer something. In my opinion...Life...is the worst. That doesn't mean that I think it is a terrible song, it just means it is the one I like the least. Hopefully, this will make things better for you.

Okay....I'm ready to get lambasted, but here goes....

    In no particular order:

    Life
    Sylvia
    Raised On Rock
    Girl Of Mine
    Three Corn Patches
    A Hundred Years From Now
    Patch It Up

Sorry folks...I just can't get through any one of them, although I've tried.

    Last Farewell is a shocker!
Love Me, Love theLife I Lead, This Is Our Dance, Take Good Care of Her are of similar quality.
not many bad ones though, when you consider the huge output.

I don't like the 1970 version of Love Letters. The 1966 version is so much better.

And the whole Love Letters album is the worst Elvis album of the 70s. It really is a left-over from great sessions. Why did RCA kept on flooding the market with so many albums in one year?

I agree about the Love Letters album.

If I were you, I know that I'd love me...

She Wears My Ring is a song that does little for me.

    I like "The Last Farewell".

In fact I like most songs from the Seventies. But if I had to name one of the lesser ones, for me it would be: "Take Good Care Of Her".

IS THERE A "WORST" SONG FROM THE 70'S???

(Just had to say that, since most people know that I am a HUGE fan of Elvis in the 70's!!)

I honestly can't pick ONE song that I feel is the WORST song of the 70's. There are certainly songs that Elvis recorded in the 70's which I don't listen to nearly as often as others, which I suppose makes them my LEAST favorite songs of the 70's. But I just can't bring myself to label one song the WORST song of the 1970's.

I guess the song that would come closest to that unfortunate label of WORST SONG, for me, would have to be SOFTLY AS I LEAVE YOU. Technically, can this song even really be labeled a song? It's more of a recitation, in my opinion....and I just can't bring myself to listen to this song only once in a blue moon. I don't think it has anything to do with Elvis' performance in the song, but rather Sherill Nielsen's performance....while I don't dislike Sherill by any means, I just don't think his voice always meshed well with Elvis' and I think that Elvis' opinion of him was overrated...again, this is only my opinion!!

It's funny--I don't care too much for most of Sherrill's contributions to Elvis' works, but that song really works, in my opinion.

As far as The Last Farewell not being appropriate for Elvis to sing--and you're not alone in thinking that, Wade--I don't get that. Is it because he wasn't English?

First of all, I am sure Elvis was drawn to the beautiful chorus. I think that is an exceptional lyric:

I have loved you dearly, more dearly than the spoken word can tell

The second verse as well probably struck a chord with Elvis, particularly the "I have no fear of death" line.

I think it's a very well written song, and the fact that it was unlike most of his repertoire should not have kept him from doing it.
...you won't forget me when I go.
