I hope it does well, but trying to capture the essense of Elvis in any show, any production is just very hard to do.
You can't create the charisma which was a huge part of Elvis live.
There's been alot of unfair negativity towards the new Cirque Du Soliel 'Viv Elvis' show in Las Vegas. Some people love it while others either don't understand it or simply hate it. I have a close friend who I work with who just this weekend returned from a trip to Las Vegas and he attened Friday night's performance of the show at the Aria resort. His description of the show was that he enjoyed it and that it was better than he expected and gave him a new perspective about Elvis Presley. But he also added that it was not worth $200.00 dollars a ticket. He did say the theater was really nice and elaborate and was about 3/4 filled to capacity. That's impressive consideirng most shows in Vegas these days aren't drawing half of what they used to due to the economic crisis out there. Some are even closing along with casinos.
One thing is for certain though, 'Viva Elvis' is making new fans who would any other time not care to even listen to Elvis. So there's a positive and that means future generations will learn more about the man and not just the music through shows like Viva Elvis'.'
Now, as for the misconception about the show, there's alot of negative feedback from Cirque fans expecting a Cirque-like production. But 'Viva Elvis' apprently isn't a normal Cirque type of show. Think more musical meets broadway with a touch of Cirque acrobatics and stunts. More dancing than twirling. This might need to be addressed publicly by the company, both CKX and Cirque Du Soleil or crowds may get turned off by the negaitvity thrown at the show.
The rating for the show has slipped a notch from a 3 stars to 2.5 on Yelp.com and Tripadvisor.com. These are where visitors get reviews of the Vegas shows and decide if they should spend their money to see. This will not help 'Viva Elvis' at all if the reviews continue to degrade the show. Something needs to be done and fast. Either explain it better or revamp it to fit the customer's wants.
Another knock has been that so many guests have come away with no soundtrack recording of the show and it's upset them. It makes sense why they would be upset. RCA should have already put it out by now instead of waiting till mid summer to do so.
Overall, despite the negative reviews, the show is apparently doing well enough to make a profit. It's not the lowest rated show among Cirque shows in Vegas which is a good thing. Chris Angel is and it's been in production for a few years now and still barely drawing in an audience. Hopefully over time Viva Elvis' will thrive and surpass the 'Beatles Love' in Vegas. But Elvis will have competition soon. In 2012 Cirque is opeing a Michael Jackson-themed show at the MGM.

Work in Progress!
I saw Viva Elvis last Monday and thought it was great despite its flaws eg "Col Parkers" part is badly written and just does`nt work for me, and the Jailhouse Rock segment could have been done much better. The highlight for me was the Bossa Nova Baby segment...i would buy the soundtrack cd (if it ever comes out) for that track alone, the live band really swung it!
A great night out and even though i was sat near the back it only cost me $55 and i stiil had a great view of the stage.
$200 a ticket?

The prices are about to drop this summer due to poor ticket sales due to the economy. It's not that the show is bad. It's that the Aria resort hotel is having trouble getting people to stay there. It's just way too expensive right now.
The soundtrack should be released later this summer.
I am still sputtering at $200
seriously, for that amount, I'd have to be able to have sex with a cast member of my choice.

The tickets are $200 for all other Cirque Du Soliel shows on the strip in Las Vegas. But I do agree with you. That is way too much to see a circus act put to music.
I didn't know Cirque cost that much normally - I have never been to Vegas - and if that's what entertainment runs as a norm, I don't imagine I ever will
